Growing fodder for chickens

Hubby came home with 2 small drawer units for me! All i have soaking is boss...thats all i can get right now but he also bought navy beans and northern beans? He wants me to try those too! . ? Think theyll work!?

Not sure about beans, but I know lentils work great, are really good for them, are cheap and can be purchased at most grocery stores near where you buy the beans.

I got my fodder system up and running again. I served out the first portion yesterday and the girls were so happy to see it again! So far, all I have done is wheat fodder. I found a 20lb bag at Walmart, and that has lasted me through the winter so far. Then I found a 50lb bucket of wheat at Costco for the same price. I always have a use for emptied buckets, so I bought that also. This has been a fund feeding experiment and the girls really appreciate it

It did take me a while to figure out how to prevent mold. It seemed after the first or second batch in a container, I would end up with mold. I now use hot soapy water to clean and then a watered down bleach solution to disinfect. I haven't had any problems with mold since, so that seems to be working for me.

I really want to grow fodder for my chickens, but I haven't been able to find any plain wheat.

The closest I've come is bird seed that has millet, black oil sunflower seeds and wheat.

I've gotten 2 small trays and made holes in the bottom so water can drain. I set them by the window, and we have a florescent light but I can't find it. Hopefully this will work!

I'm about to visit a couple local shops to do some price comparisons. As I am completely new to this, what are reasonable prices for wheat and/or barley? I don't want to spend more than I should.
