Growing fodder for chickens

I started doing this for my duck flock a couple of weeks ago and they are very enthusiastic about the wheat sprouts and fodder. Sometimes I don't wait for it to fill in as much - I like giving it when the blades are 2.5 to 3 inches high. I have not crunched numbers much, using a little over a cup of dry seeds per batch for 13 ducks.

Simple setup, works for me. I used my Dremel to make the drain and air holes.

I'm assuming you have drain holes in the bottom of each tub to allow the water to drain though all the tubs but how do you keep the seeds from going through the holes? Are they just tiny holes? :)

Just got some seed. Can't wait to try this. I saw different people doing different highs when layering the seeds. Like 1/2 in. high or 3/4in. high. Does the hight of the seed layer affect the fullness of the mat?

The holes are smaller than the soaked wheat - maybe 1/16"? I just lucked out that the drill bit on my Dremel was a good size.

Some use an old fork held over the gas stove flame to heat the fork and then press it into the bottom of the container and melt holes.

I don't have a gas stove. But I do have that little drill.

Also, I cut two large holes in the lids and line up the drain holes over the big holes in the lids so the water streams down easily. I left a band across the top of the lids for stability.

Like a figure 8 or the letter B.

I checked and I think I have 1/2 " more or less. The mat forms after about four days.

I think it does. I do about 3/4 inch of newly sprouted seeds in a 1020 tray. It mat's up to about an inch of thick roots when the grass grows to 3 inches I would guess.
