Growing & harvesting fresh alfalfa

I am so glad this post is here!!! I have been looking online for a couple of hours now to find out how I could grow my own mini patch of alfalfa for our chickens. I am going to buy seed today and see how it works out. Have you saved seeds to replant or is that not necessary? If you did try to dry out to feed during the winter please let me know how that went and if you have any tips. Thanks!!!

I am excited to see this thread. I just bought some alfalfa seeds that i plan to plant in the chicken run this week. We have chickens in our community garden in NYC and we have a red-tail hawk problem! They have taken 3 of our chickens so we dont want to let them out unsupervised. So i thought i would plant the alfalfa for tehm to graze on. Hope it works and is good for them.

Welcome to BYC.
Most runs end up devoid of any vegetation. So if you want to grow anything in a run you will have to protect it. Most use growing frames. A frame that suspends fencing of wide enough weave to let what ever you are growing through it, but doesn't allow the chickens rip it out.
