grrr, feed store guy vent...

I just wanted to say that I have had a similar experience at TSC. Being new to this whole chicken thing I went to TSC to get my starter supplies. They had the feed, brooder lamps/bulbs, waterers, feeders and RED CEDAR shavings in their "Chick Days" display. So I bought the RED CEDAR shavings because I didn't know anything until I posted on this site. I went back to the store to tell them I wanted to return the cedar shavings. One of the nimrods working there says, "Oh yeah! We know that you can't use cedar shavings for chicks". I asked, "Why put them in the display then?" The response, "Well we just used the bags so we could stack stuff on them". All I could do was start laughing. Nimrod knew that I was laughing at them.

I should have just bought the stuff at the feed store which ordered my chicks. I little whole in the wall store with only a sign saying "Feed Store". The lady there was awesome! She called me a couple days before the chicks arrived to make sure I was "ready". Then on the day they arrived she called me as soon as the truck got there. When I picked them up she was very politelty making sure I had all the necessary supplies. She even said if any of the chicks die she would replace them with hers.

IMHO, sometimes big stores are too big.

my TSC is pretty good. Their chick days they had lots of information, and proper supplies LOL. Everytime I've gone in there the last couple months though, they are out of 50lb bags of chick starter. I have 56 chicks, what am I gonna do with a little 20lb bag? LOL I do like the people there better, they have better hours than the SS (they close at 12 on Saturdays!), and they are closer to my house.

we don't have any little "hole in the wall" locally owned feed stores-- wish we did though!

I do like the family run feed stores. I really like Monroe Farm and Feed. They are like just down the street from a Del's too. However, both are like a 40 min drive out... or longer if there is traffic... so I stick with the co op in town.

Wow, that's annoying. It would have been one thing if you were ASKING him for his opinion! TSC is great because they have a big selection of products, but at all of the ones near me, most of their employees know nothing. It's like a Lowe's store- every now and then you find someone who's retired and wants to work part time at a store that sells the stuff they know about, but most of the employees were just looking for any retail job that would hire them, so you can't ask them ANYTHING. That's why this site is great. I get my info here, then buy accordingly.

well, I understand that part of sales is giving your opinion. Dh works on computers, and gives his opinion, but the customer can take it or leave it. Like I told him, if he had said "I have customers that buy xyz, and they're happy with it" and left it at that, no problem. WHY are you going to push what your customer is telling you they don't want?

Hello there. I'm out in Wahkiakum County and felt a little dirty when I had to go to Dell's for Milk Replacer. ... but L&J was out, Breezeway doesn't stock it, etc.

I go to Western World in Longview. They are great, and very knowledgable.

this is basically what my husband told me. He said that I have to let him know that I *know* what I want, and it's not up for discussion. He said to make sure when I come in that wise butt can say "that's a woman who knows what she wants". He also told me not to change feed stores based on the jerk, to base which feed store I go to on quality, price, convenience etc. and to stand my ground. Dh tends to think he wouldn't treat a man the same way. I think he's prob. right.

That is all so familiar to me!!! I'm a small woman - and I have this personality where I try to be extra nice to everyone and unfortunately it gets me in a whole lot of trouble because certain personalties assume they must tell me what I want. Then when I have to stand up and say, "I DON'T want that - I want this" - they suddenly look at me like I'm from mars. I'm finding I have to go into places with a very strong sense of self importance, say what I want, act like I'm a rocket scientist and then only after the transaction is over can I engage in small talk etc. I know it sounds nutty - but otherwise they try to bulldoze me. They'd NEVER do that to my b/f who is as big as a gorilla and looks like he could take you apart like a chimp peels a banana. I just have to deal with my own actions and the way I express myself to get the jerks to understand I won't be bulldozed.

Their prices make me QQ. The Farm Store out of Chehalis delivers monthly to my farm for no charge, so I'm really only running into Longview when desperate.

Does the Farm Store require a minimum? I sure could use a break on feed costs, but I have a VERY small number of animals, so tonnage is out of the question.

The ton discount is at 1,000 lbs rather than a full ton. But, I don't know if Kelso is on the route already. They generally deliver to farms. But if there is something close to you they are already delivering to it would be worth the trouble phoning them. Their prices on fencing, feeders, waterers, etc. is really great. Western World is just brutally overpriced.
