I also added a PC fan to mine and used a dimmer light switch knob to adjust the temperature. That helped a lot.

Ditto BDG - I put a towel over mine to add an additional layer of protection. I have also learned (the hard way) not to over-react to a temp fluctation. The tiniest adjustment to the knob can make a significant difference.

I bought an LG and fired it up to check temps and they were all over the place

I didn't use it. I was scared to death that it was going to cook my eggs.

Sorry about your eggs...I too just lost my hatch of duck eggs...and I really needed some hens from those! Very frustrating! I have good hatch rates with my chicken eggs, just not the ducks so far.I do find the temp in the room fluctuating is a big no-no for the LG's. I never open a window with my bator on.
