Guard dog ?

I would not put the dog in there right away. I would make sure the dog and chickens are comfortable being around each other. I plan on putting a dog kennel outside of the fenced in area before they are trusted to be around each other. The dog would be able to see the chickens from the kennel but not touch and if my plan doesn’t work the kennel would become a permanent place for the dog.
I would also have to wait until the dog understands it’s bound and to stay away from the road.
My brothers dog is a German wire hair.
She was fine around the chickens until we took her grouse hunting now she has become a predator.
The new dog would not be trained to hunt.

Definitely don't rely on a Dog to protect your Birds 100%.
And don't confine a dog to a Run if things go sideways with the Birds. No need for a dog.

100000% agree.
Don't get a bird dog or hunting dog.
Been there, done that with a friend and his labs terrorize his birds.

I would get:
A Maremma
Great Pyrenees
Kuvasz
Anatolian Shepherd

A huge NO! For anatolian shepherd (kangal)... We live in Turkey and My stepfather breeds kangals. They are not all shepherds. They are aggressive, territorial and hard to train dogs. They are also hunters. They are bred to fight and kill hyenas, bears, jackals, wolwes, mountain lions, snakes, foxes and badgers. They are good with goat, sheep, cattle or ox herds but they often enjoy to kill small birds such as chickens and goose. They would kill and eat most of those animals in the yard . Also those are very big dogs, gets tall as 90 cm to 1 meters and around 70-110 kg.

I have had active hunting dogs around poultry. Generally, that does not not preclude their safety around chickens, even if what do is supposed to hunt is another type of bird. Dogs can learn to tell bird species apart pretty easily.

I have 3 working dogs. My Maremma to protect my Birds and Yard. He doesn't wander far from the pens.
I have a Golden Retriver/Aussie that patrols my entire property and chases off Fox and Coyotes.
I have a Yorkshire Terrier that is trained to wrangle Birds. None of my Dogs have harmed a Bird I own. Proper training.
