Sorry for the loss! I don't know how long it will take to rebuild your life but I pray everything goes smoothly .You can always get chickens once you fix your coop so nothing else can kill them .

Sorry for your terrible losses. I’m assuming no one was hurt in the fire. Rebuilding will obviously be a pain but you will hopefully have the opportunity to change those annoying things every house has.I'm planning on it.
First step, getting a house built.
Second Step, Move back into my house.
Third Step, fixing my coop and run to figure out how they got in and get it fixed.
Fourth Step, clean out the coop and get it ready.
Fifth Step, figure out what I want and where to get it. (this step is kinda fluid.)
My first flock was a mixed flock of hatchery quality birds. I then brought some true araucana and some true ameraucana into it. Not sure where I'm going to go, and as much as I'd love to get a flock of araucana; they're quite expensive.
I thought bobcats were protected in FL?So sorry for you loss. A bobcat killed 14 birds one night here. I set traps and caught it. It didn't come back the next night but did the following night, big mistake. I have been seeing another one since.

So sorry for your losses. Glad this is a place where you can come to share. Take care! So, many of you know the last year (Fall 2020 - Now) has been pretty shit for me. I had foot surgery in Oct, house fire in Nov... and now, we lost our whole flock over the weekend. My neighbor who has been watching the flock for me says a bobcat has been hanging out. Well, sometime on friday (probably) something got into my run and got the whole flock. The only survivor was the rooster, one of two araucana. I'm letting my neighbor keep him, since I have to clean out the run and coop, and figure out what happened... AND build a house and rebuild our life.
Guess I have a little less than a year to get everything figured out, what breed I want to concentrate on... Sigh.... I need my house and life back.
Most predators when it affects killing of livestock it's ok to eliminate. I will research it though. Since it killed 14 birds then I guess it would be SSS.I thought bobcats were protected in FL?
But in any event, this isn't exactly an option in my case.
Chickens provide us with fresh eggs, compost and fertilizer year round . Most of all raising them gives us a sense of security . I'm sorry for your loss and hope you can build your life back better than before!I'm making a cheap incubator to help me get started raising an expensive breed.Maybe you could do that too!I've thought about that too. I'd need to get an incubator, but right now I need to concentrate on appliances. LOL

Bobcats are a native species with a legal hunting season in Florida (bobcat hunting regulations and season dates can be found on the FWC website at: MyFWC.com/hunting). A bobcat can be taken as a nuisance if it causes or is about to cause property damage, presents a threat to public safety, or causes an annoyance in, under, or upon a building. Euthanasia of any live captured bobcat is prohibited, they must be released per Florida Rule 68A-9.010, Taking Nuisance Wildlife.

A furbearer trapping license is required of anyone, except residents aged 65 or older, to take or attempt to take furbearing animals with live traps, snares or other devices, and to sell the hide and/or meat regardless of method of take (gun, live traps or snares).
