When you have an old hen (that has a name) that's not laying very well anymore and the hen house is getting crowded with a bunch of new chicks that were hatched during the year....you never make a pot of soup or gumbo out of her?

I guess I was just raised to look at them as livestock and a food source...I'm just not wired for making pets out of chickens.

Now don't get me wrong... I love them all very much and 3 years ago when we bought this house that had no place for chickens and I had to give mine up until we could clear some land and build a chicken house.... I have missed having chickens like a "normal" person would miss their leg if it was cut off....now that I have my chickens back I feel whole again....but I still have no desire what so ever to name them and make pets out of them.

Am I weird?​

I am new to the whole "Kill your own birds" thing. This chicken I did yesterday was the first one I have ever done. About a month ago I did do 2 turkeys and they were my first kill ever.
So, as for the "Old Hens", I have not come to that cross roads yet. I am really not too worried about it actually. Things have a way of working out and I eat eggs, so I can easily control my chicken population if I need to.
