I bought a SKS in the mid 90s for $150. Just before that they were around $85. Original from 1954 Russian with chrome lined barrel and ten round swing down magazine. Had stripper clips with it also. Was in mint condition. I put the fiberforce dragunov sniper stock on it, flash suppressor and bi-pod, scope. Had a lot of fun with that rifle, ammo was $2 a box of 20 back then. Had 30rd detachable magazines and a couple 5rd one's for hunting. I did deer hunt one yr with it. I sold the whole lot for $250 about 15yrs ago. Now it's hard to find those nice Russian ones, the original Chinese was just as nice.
Buddy of mine bought a Chinese knock-off back then a Norinco I think it was called, that one was not so good. Functioned fine and shot good but it didn't have a blued barrel, was painted and the wood stock was I believe pine and just a cheap stain and shellac. And I highly doubt it had the chrome lined barrel.
I think the chrome was just to protect against the cheap military surplus corrosive ammo.

but you need to ask your self some questions. do you plan to hunt with it? what animals do you plan to hunt with it/use on? shotgun, rifle or muzzle-loader? next what caliber, rim fire, center fire or shot gun GA

now people are going to say sks, now its not a bad option there like 250CAN at cabelas, semi auto (5 rounds here as that's all that is legal on semi auto center fires rifles) but you guys in the states get 10 rounds (in the sks) i believe maybe even more on your semi auto guns. the round is close to a 30-30 (which is a great deer round and yes it can take down a moose, guys in the north do it all the time) now i like them my friend has one but it can not shoot straight if his life depended on it. (plus if you get one not in working order, example covered in oil its some work to get it in shooting order) i also like the mosin-nagant its close to a 30-06 which is my dads favorite hunting round.

next, for my opinion depends what your after, i shot a rabbit with a 30-30 while deer hunting (its legal where i live to hunt rabbits with a center fire rifle and any time of the year) it um well left just a leg i was maybe 10 yards and took a shot killed it thought it was still living and shot again leaving nothing but a leg (it was tasty though) how ever an sks or other center fire rifle would be great for animals such as deer or wild pigs. would not use it on small game. just my opinion though.

now for my opinion on a gun and caliber, i would either get a shot gun (12, 20 or .410) single shot (am getting an H&R pardner from my grandpa when i get my fire arms licence in 20 GA, great duck, upland game bird and small game shot gun) it shoots good the only thing i added was a recoil pad on it. but there are more small game animals out there then big game (squirrels, rabbits, beaver, muskrat, grouse etc..) all of which i can use a .22lr on with out damaging too much meat. (and where i live its legal to hunt upland game birds with a rim fire) also am a trapper so i am biased for the rim fire guns as i can carry them on a snowmobile during normal trapping operations on my trap line. (when i get my fire arm licence and i get to actually do some trapping this year) i like the marlin 795 or marlin model 60 (am going/getting a marlin 795, they shoot great though as my grandpa has one that am getting)

Depends on what state you live in here in the USA on the laws. We used to be able to legally use any capacity here in N.Y. I've had many 30rd and a 75rd drum. On semi's though for hunting it's always been 5rds.
Can't possess any magazines over ten rds now in N.Y.

Just got this pretty much stole it. Shoots decent i only put 5rounds down at 15yrds all where within a half inch or so.

I had the sks's big brother a Sar ak47 nice gun shot real well times got hard and i sold it wish i hadn't. My step dad uses an sks as a brush gun and has taken alteast 3 deer i can recall with it.

After doing a little reading on the the realities of a shtf situation, I think I like the idea of a semi auto .22 lr. Thanks for the suggestions and input!

I sold it yrs ago and recently wanted another .22 and was looking for budget friendly, the Marlin and Ruger are pricey. There was a Mossberg semi for around a $100 don't remember the model, plinkster maybe, and a Savage for a little more, I bought the Savage. Jams quite often and ruins shells wish I never bought it.
IMHO and probably the majority the Ruger 10/22 is the best semi .22 out there for the price and well worth it. And tons of add ons out there for the 10/22.

One more question, if I may? I've read that a 22 lr will take out a fox with a clean head shot, but it may not be legal due to the chance of injury to the animal. What's the smallest (and preferably common & affordable) round appropriate for a fox and maybe even coyote?

.17 Winchester super magnum. I'd love to get one but I'm not a big fan of new ammo, so many are obsolete now after being the next big new thing. Right now the .17 win super mag is only available in a Ruger bolt and I think a Winchester low wall/high wall? single shot, not sure about that one.
Damn nice round if it gains in popularity and at $18 a box of 50 cause its a rimfire cheap would be nice.
Other than that one the .22 hornet is a nice round. .22 swift even better, both center fire rds.
Dang though, the little ole .22 ...
Not good enough for fox/coyote...
It'll drop in its tracks a deer if you aim right.

Which is illegal lol keep a 22 to killing small animals not wounding them because placement was off which is why we have larger calibers.

I will like this one.

I have according to my DW. Too many rifles and guns. But she gave up on me not acquiring any more along time ago.

My newest acquisition is a ruger mark ii. Stainless, laminate stock in a 6.5 creedmore. It's topped with a 6x18x50 Nikon.

Trigger set a 2 lbs.
It's tack driver. Just have to wait til rifle season to hunt with it.

My wifes a hunter so i have that to go on but instead of juat buying lol i do alot of trading and that she dont get quite as much.
Just like i might trade my RAR for a R700 adl with a few goodies here soon and my wife already has one in a 270 bdl lol and im like but honey they have so much more aftermarket available she just said ok atleast you arent buying another gun as i just did that yesterday.
