Killed many deer with the old Rem 742 semi-auto that belonged to my grandfather. The lug grooves in the receiver finally wore out so it’s hanging on the wall now. My brother lucked up and got a 742 carbine in pristine condition that he is hunting with now.

i don't hunt white tail much yet. just got into big game hunting and well got drawn for mule deer and elk my in my 2 or 3 year. so had no reason to try and there numbers are down where i hunt so was not really wanting to get one.

now i use a 30-30 for most of my big game hunting. shot a black bear this last spring with it. will use it for elk, moose, white/mule deer.

the only one i will most likely not use it for is pronghorn.

Are you using Horandy Leverevolution? I would highly recommend it if you are not. It bring better trajectory and ballistic tip performance to the 30-30 round.

they where all sold out at my local gun store so i just use a Winchester round. its the deer and black bear one.

i wanted to get some but still yet to get it.

I am a dead killer at 100 yards with my 30-30 and normal ammo. It starts dropping heavy at 150 yards and 200 I wouldn't even try. With Leverevolution it drops 3" at 200 yards. I guess it would depend on the distance you are shooing but ballistic tips kill better also.

Hornady SST rounds out of a 30-06 are flat out the deadliest thing I have seen. I worry it is a bit too much for whitetail, IMO. I got pictures to prove it. Not sure this site would approve of them. Round went though the shoulder, broke the leg, messed up some meat. Made a hole in the right side of the heart and opened the left side like a flower. Bullet stopped in the lung somewhere and never even touched the left rib cage. Every Cor-lokt bullet I have ever shot was through and through.

okay for all you gun experts got a question here.

looking for some advice or ideas.

first off am looking for a fur friendly round (to save and sell the pelts) now at the moment i have a .22 mag (ruger american bolt action rifle) which i plan to use for close range coyotes, foxes and even beaver if i get the chance.

now my family owns some land up north (which when i bought the .22 mag for coyotes it was for more coyotes) and it has tons of coyotes yet a nice population of wolves. now i don't think a .22 mag is good for wolf. (not enough power to humanly kill)

also to note, as i am a licensed trapper i am allowed to shoot as wolves during the fur season as well as trap them. the reason am thinking of shooting them is a lot of people around up there are cattle men and have lost a few calves to the wolves (and bears)

now am looking (more for a round/caliber) then a specific gun. to have in case a wolf comes out when calling coyotes.

I’ve built several ARs chambered in 6.8spc. That is a very popular round for hogs and coyotes in the South. I’ve worked up deer loads for mine though. If you’re not into building and you need a caliber just powerful enough to stop a wolf but also a fur friendly round, I don’t think you need to go any bigger than a very accurate .223. I would think your going for head shots if you’re shooting for fur anyway. Your typical range is a big factor though and I don’t know what that is.

sorry i forget some details.

the max range is about 200-225 yards. also forget to mention i can not use AR platform rifles. for two reasons, here in Canada there banned from hunting and only allowed to be shot on a legal range.

most of the time we go for heart/long shots as its a more reliable kill.

also to note these wolves are big. i just google searched and there as big as prong horn antelope and mature males can get up to 150-175 lbs on rare cases.
