Only males can get drafted.

thanks. I was wondering this..with all the new rules and things..

No, not unless the law gets changed. I am not registered so I would not come up in a draft. Only boys must register at 18.

ooh yes! I see, i forgot that important point!

Have you ever heard of the Night Witches? They were women combat pilots who flew only at night... they had slightly better kill and safety ratios to the men who flew during the day...

Women Air Service Pilots (WASP) flew over six million miles during WWII, delivering planes, towing targets for ground to air and air to air artillery training, working as test pilots for planes that had been damaged, refurbished or never flown before - they had the same and better safety rating as the guys... and that was in the 40s - imagine now that women don't have to contend with as much prejudice they can spend their time honing their skills... I think there most certainly are places for them in combat -

I apologize for straying off the topic - but an interesting and little known part of our history may help our thinking... about guns, and now combat -

I know for a FACT that some of these women, when they left to train to be WASP at Avenger Field in Sweetwater Texas... left flocks of chickens at home!!

I know what you mean. The fire station where my SO works would love it if a female fire fighter could be hired, but not one has ever been able to pass the physical test. I would never expect the fire stations to lower their criteria for the sake of allowing women in, but I've heard women in the military have different physical requirements than men? Whether or not that's true, I have reservations about people claiming all women can do anything men can do. I know for a fact, without even having to try, that I would never be able to write in the snow from a stationary point nearly as well as any man could.

When I was in from 81-85 the women did have a different phys ed requirement. Less push ups in 2 minutes, less sit ups and longer time top run 2 miles. However when I was in they didn't allow the women to serve in combat rolls. In a combat MOS you are expected to carry around up to 130 lbs or so for around 1/4 mile. The airborne guys jump with about 85lbs of equipment. I know there is a lot of women that could make the runs and do the sit ups and push ups but I think most women would be hard pressed to carry 130lbs of equipment to the motor pool during an alert.

When i worked in a nursing home, we had this adorable little old lady. She used to sit us all down and tell us about when she was a soilder in the war. She was a spy for Germany.

She said they had a whole platoon of them. just women..and this was way back in WW II.

We would be if we could find them. My DH checks the gun shop every week, but the shelves are bare of all standard items. He brings home the rare box of stuff we normally wouldn't bother to get. He even bought a box of ammo at WalMart, which is ironically the most expensive ammo here.
He also reloads, but we haven't found Gold Dot lead bullets since November, literally.

(But my husband told me he just read about how a bad guy got shot in the back of the head with a .40, and the bullet was stuck between his scalp and skull. He said "I had wanted a .40, but I think I'll stick with a .45 or 9 mm.)

But I don't know if you're a guy or gal. I can only handle a .38 well. Guess I'll have to shoot for the eye sockets?

That is hardly fair.

No, no, that's plenty fair.

Men have BEEN in combat. They know. They know we shouldn't be there. It doesn't have anything to do with 'fair'. Now if an all-girl platoon wants to go fight some other countries all-girl platoon, have at it.
(I'm talking about in the trenches fighting, not submarines and bombers and whatnot.)

You're joking, right? Just because military service is not your cup of tea, would you seriously deny every other woman in American the right to make that choice for herself? Remember, now, that we have an all volunteer military. Nobody serves who does not choose to serve. You surely cannot mean that someone should not be allowed to serve her country just because of which genitalia she was born with!

Same thing goes for combat. It's no different than wanting to be a cop. Thousands of women serve their communities as cops. They risk their lives every day to protect their families and friends from harm. So why should a woman not be allowed to choose a combat role in the military and serve her entire country the way she serves her own community?

Heck, I'm a guy and even *I* can see how chauvinistic your statement is.

I think that what you are really saying is that the idea of military service scares you. Nothing wrong with that. But it does not automatically follow that it scares ALL women or we would not have so many female cops patrolling our streets. I'll bet if you think about it, you'll see the logic of this. Women should be shown the same respect for their desire to serve as guys are and be allowed to choose for themselves if they will serve.

Rusty

Have you been in combat?

I see very little similarity between a female cop and a woman in direct combat.
