Gun Owners and Non-Gun Owners should come to a Meeting of the Minds

The forum is neither a Republic nor a Democracy. It's a Dictatorship, just ask the mods.

I think the only thing the topic could possibly be is to agree to disagree.

Yes, reason has a very strong appeal over propaganda to me.

Have we come to a meeting of the minds, yet? This isn't about guns; heavens no. Those who think so are taking the narrow view of being misinformed. This is about the will of the ruling government to diminish, and in time, overturn the individual rights of citizens. For our own good, of course.

Here are a few items to ponder along these lines, in case you need something to think about:

"Single acts of tyranny may be ascribed to the accidental opinion of the day; but a series of oppressions, begun at a distinguished period, and pursued unalterably through every change of ministers (adminstrators) too plainly proves a deliberate, systematic plan of reducing us to slavery." - - Thomas Jefferson

“The strength of the Constitution lies entirely in the determination of each citizen to defend it. Only if every single citizen feels duty bound to do his share in this defense are the constitutional rights secure.” - - Albert Einstein

"The police cannot protect the citizen at this stage of our development, and they cannot even protect themselves in many cases. It is up to the private citizen to protect himself and his family, and this is not only acceptable, but mandatory." - Jeff Cooper

"Everyone wants to live at the expense of the state. They forget that the state lives at the expense of everyone." - Frederic Bastiat

"As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such twilight that we all must be most aware of change in the air - however slight - lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness." - - Justice William O. Douglas

"Why should I defend a nation that prevents me from defending my own family?" - - William Wallace, 2000

"Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience.... Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world in the face of poverty and starvation and stupidity and war and cruelty. Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves, and all the while the grand thieves are running the country. That's our problem." Howard Zinn, "Failure to Quit," p. 45.

“Once a government is committed to the principle of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all its citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear." Harry S Truman

We should not forget that the spark which ignited the American Revolution was caused by the British attempt to confiscate the firearms of the colonists.

"Experience should teach us to be most on our guard to protect liberty when the government’s purposes are beneficial ... the greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well meaning but without understanding’’
— Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis, 1928

‘‘We cannot be so fixated on our desire to preserve the rights of ordinary Americans.’’
— B.J.Clinton, USA Today, 3/11/93 page 2A

‘‘The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subjected people to carry arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subjected peoples to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that the underdog is a sine qua non [an essential] for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or police.’’

-- Adolph Hitler, Edict of March 18, 1938

i like the philosophy "i'd rather have a gun and not need it, rather that need a gun and not have it"

i'm armed. always have been and always will be. i have my rifles for hinting, although i prefer archery hunting. i have my 9mm for protection and since my wife has use of only one good arm, i have a walther P22 for her. it's not a show stopper, but she can work the slide. it will do the job if need be. i always tell her to keep pulling the trigger until it stops firing!

Ah. Now we are getting somewhere. So since I have illustrated why the Federal government will never in our lifetime ban guns or even seriously address much needed gun control, we are down to state and local control of the issue.

Let me say I agree with you. This should be in the hands of local folks who want to have a say in what goes on in their state and city. Therefore, if the citizens of either locality believe it is in their best interest to ban some guns and set certain requirements for gun ownership within the bounds of that locality, they should be allowed to do so.

There. A meeting of the minds, finally.

Ummm... I think you mean Second Amendment. But who's counting?

And when you join the State militia, you let me know.

Why would you need to know? It has nothing to do with the Second Amendment - thankfully that has been reinforced time and time again, to protect it from those who think they are working with a 'fluid document'. But that point has been made over and over - and you choose to ignore it over and over - so, let's give it a rest and really discuss gun ownership as it stands now, today.

Someone mentioned an all out ban on guns. If you own one, post ban, you risk being an instant criminal.

That is what it will take to get rid of guns. We will have to succumb to a total turn in of all guns and being no longer able to own or obtain them. It will not get rid of crime or the desire to harm another, but it will go a long way towards getting "rid" of guns. We'll assume for the moment that all actual criminals will obey that law, too.

Then when you are assaulted by a ne'er do well, he wont have a gun. Instead, he can attack you with simpler, cheaper weapons like a bludgeon, baseball bat, iron pipe, brick, knife, shank, shiv, car, tire iron, chain, axe, hatchet....
