i'm used to shooting a 12g and 410 shotguns and i would take it out to pratice wouldnt be any use if i couldnt hit the target lol. mainly it would sit away from my kids and be used as protection. as long as i can affoard the rounds the more it will get used to just go out and pratice on some targets, so yea i could very well get 1000 or more rounds out of it in a year

For home defense, if you are already reasonably proficient, with a shotgun. Stick with that :) And if you've ever had someone accidentally point one at you, you know that barrel looks like a cannon/garbage can, when pointed in your direction.

As they say in the army... "Your pistol is for fighting your way back to your rifle." A box of shotgun shells is cheap and you can cycle the buckshot in and out of a pump gun a lot of times before you wear it out. If you ever have a real need to shoot someone, like that young mom... you cannot beat a 12 gauge for stopping power. Handguns are only for last resort or carry, since packing around a full size rifle/shotgun is a little inconvenient.

In other words, if you're home, have a (legally) short-barreled shotgun handy. And unlike the Oklahoma mom, you never have to ask if it's okay to stop someone from harming you or your family.

You may.

They can be fun to play with, but you asked about a DEFENSE handgun.

The 410 doesn't perform as well as a 38 in that regard, and is a larger, harder to handle weapon.

You "could" use the 45 Colt, but then you get into the problems of over penetration and much more recoil.

But don't take my word for it:

I dont have to take anyone's word for it cause I have actually shot it. I like it. I like how it preforms. An it out preforms my .38+Ps out to about 30 feet. An the polymer Judge is 3 ounces lighter than my current .38, unloaded. But me wanting a Judge has nothing to do with the poll. It was about someone else. I will never carry a auto for protection ever again, learned that the hard way.
Your link seems questionable though.

Cutting up cheep long gun shells to make them fit then saying they only made it in to the second jug?

Everyone else on the internet doing the same test with good ammunition made for hand guns are getting penetration of at least twice that,

through three jugs and penetrated the fourth, but did NOT exit.

passed through ALL FOUR JUGS, and a 1/4" sheet of plywood

Quote:
Test Results: All 4 pellets penetrated into the 4th jug. Two of the pellets impacted the end of the 4th jug hard enough to make large indents on the 5th jug, but they did not break the 5th jug. This means that 2 pellets had between 18" and 24" of water penetration and two pellets would have had slightly more than 24" of penetration had they not been stopped by the jug.

Original question was this:
Would you carry/keep for defense a auto pistol if threw disability could not manipulate the slide to load or clear jams on your own(shooting one handed)

it was also stated that the one hand left was weak.

A weak one handed person with a 12 gauge in an emergency situation is like giving a 10 year old an m-60 and telling him to fire it from the hip before the BG gets him. Even a pistol gripped short barrel needs another hand unless you plan to stop the upward momentum from the kick with your forehead.

Why bother with a weapon that isn't fully functional for whatever reason?
It would depend on the weakness of the fellow's bad arm as to whether a revolver would represent a `hit' on capacity...

this speedloader is a good plan. I can unload a revolver, reload it with this one handed. moderately fast too, if I practice.

there are 8 shot revolvers, my hubby has one. not very consealable, but eight rounds.

you have to consider what the circumstances are where he'd need to shoot. if he's going to actually have to *reload* under those circumstances, he's probably in big trouble anyway. either way out numbered, or needs to work on his accuracy.
clearing the jam is more what I'd be worried about, and because of that, I'd say go with a revolver. pretty low likelyhood of not having the full complement of rounds available. the other thing to consider is with a lot of semi-autos, the likelihood of getting a stovepipe type failure is higher if you're weak wristed, so he's proabably going to have more jamming issues that other folks shooting the same gun.

besides I think single-handed jam clearing on a semi-auto takes a pretty fair amount of strength and coordination - you've got to opperate the slide with the strength of just one hand, not two, making it considerably harder, I think.

big fat vote for revolver here.

might also want to look at something like the rhino - because of the lower barrel position, it rotates and snaps up less than most revolvers, also better for a person with a weak wrist.

Probably the best revolver you can get is a .357 magnum, because it will shoot both .38 special or .357 magnum ammunition, both of which are common. A good Smith & Wesson .357 magnum with a 4-inch barrel is hard to beat in most situations where you need to carry a small weapon. That is why many police officers carried those guns in the past, and many still do today. I think six shots is enough to get the job done.

For home defense, a 12-guage shotgun with an 18-inch barrel and loaded with buck shot is hands down the best choice. It's much easier to hit a target with a shotgun, and if you are in a gun fight, the adrenaline will be flowing and your hands will be shaking. This will reduce the chances of hitting something with a pistol.

By the way, that young mother in Oklahoma asked the 911 operator if she could shoot when the man was on the porch. The 911 operator did not want to give legal advice, but the operator said do what you have to to protect yourself and your baby. The young mother did the right thing and shot the man when he stepped into the house. If that young mother would have shot the man on the porch they probably would have charged the woman with a crime. I doubt she would have been convicted, though.

She used a shotgun. I do not know what type, though. I like pump shotguns because of their reliability and they have a good capacity of rounds. You can't beat a good old Remington 870 as a home defense gun.

Rhino?

I actually never carry extra ammo. But I do carry 2 guns. If 10 rounds is not enough, more probably wont help ether.....

I keep a couple handy. However, if I can't knock whatever over with five shots from the good old Charter Arms .357 Target Bulldog, at close range, then I might as well be pointing my barrel finger at the target and saying `bang'; the speed loaders are comforting, somehow =)
