I have both, .22 auto for target, but for confidence of operation I have a S&W 686 revolver loaded with 125gr HP as a home defense piece. Even a one armed person can load a wheel gun fairly quickly even without a speed loader. Then again if it is for defense why isn't it loaded already?

I would suggest taking them to try out a few of each and see what they are comfortable with. The best weapon in the world is useless if the person using it is not comfortable and proficient with it.

I keep seeing the fear in this thread about autos jamming. Don't buy cheap autos...period. Get a quality auto such as a Sig Sauer, keep it clean and lubricated, and only use OEM magazines, then put jamming out of your mind. These pistols are rock solid dependable. Also check the ammo for defects before loading. I probably put 50,000 rounds down the barrels of my Sigs last year with not one jam or misfire.

After owning some cheap/less quality firearms I will now only buy top quality, besides your life may depend on it.

I have some CCI shot shells that I use in one of my 45's for predators and snake taming. I can assure you that you don't want to be on the wrong end of it within 50'. It makes hamburger quite well.

Good luck...

I have yet to find any auto that is jam proof, sigs included. The fact is that for a auto to cycle the slide has to move X amount more than the frame. A weak older person or small person shooting one handed is notorious for letting the frame follow the slide with the recoil. Getting a heavier gun can help but causes other problems for the small or weak one handed shooter.

I actually use to carry a auto. No issues till I actually had to draw an fire out side of "practice" Did not need a second shot but if I had it was not there.

I got no issue with autos but when anyone asks what is best for them there are a lot of questions that have to be answered yes before I will recommend one.

That's why I made this statement 1st thing. Any weapon reguardless of quality or type will NOT make up for a persons shortcomings. In all reality if a persons hand/arm is moving with the slide, they are probably shooting the ceiling anyway(auto or revolver). They would probably be better off with a big dog instead of a pistol...lol.

Quote: At 50 ft, the #9 shot probably would barely break the skin with the few pellets that actaully hit the target.

The true effective distance of those shell on SMALL animals is closer to 30 ft, and on humans, it would just make them really angry

One pellet weighs 0.75 gr, and at 1100 FPS, generates only 2 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle

I woldn't bet my life on them stopping anyone at all

Rhino?

I actually never carry extra ammo. But I do carry 2 guns. If 10 rounds is not enough, more probably wont help ether.....

Original question was this:
Would you carry/keep for defense a auto pistol if threw disability could not manipulate the slide to load or clear jams on your own(shooting one handed)

it was also stated that the one hand left was weak.

A weak one handed person with a 12 gauge in an emergency situation is like giving a 10 year old an m-60 and telling him to fire it from the hip before the BG gets him. Even a pistol gripped short barrel needs another hand unless you plan to stop the upward momentum from the kick with your forehead.

I was replying to hdowden's post, as you can see, from the quote.
