Not true. You can but they have to be registered with the ATF. You also have to live in a state that does not ban them. Georgia does :(

The first thing my husband did when we moved from Georgia was get a fully auto. Most people think suppressed guns are illegal also but they aren't you just have to have a permit from the ATF. Georgia allows those :) you just have to notify the local police and the ATF when you move.

We have all sorts of guns, my personal carry gun is a .38 S&W SPL Air Lite. If I feel the need I have a Lady Smith also. For home defense, as in my head board, I have a HK P30 9mmX19 on my husbands side is a Springfield 1911-A1 Cal 45 and in the corner is a 870 shotgun.

If I where to need one due to a week arm or a missing limb, I would go with the revolver with speedloader or moon clips.

rebelcowboysnb: I lived in Cobb and due to their FBI background check it took me two month to get my Georgia CCP. Moved to Alabama 15 minutes. Sad but true.

It was a real situation but the first shot did the job. I'm not all that good but it was at cant miss range.

scary! and an important lesson to those of us who plan and practice, but rarely have to do.
glad it turned out ok.

have you rethought what you carry or how you practice as a result? currious what changes you made, if any, on account of that experience...

Even then I carried a BUG but going for it was never in my mind so I'm not sure how useful it would have been if at all. I gave the 9mm back to my brother an bought a .38 colt H&R top break revolver. Several years later an I still carry a .38 special rossi but wish good top breaks were on the market. I also still carry my NAA .22 revolver as a BUG. But I am not a auto hater. My primary gun will always be a revolver of decent caliber but I wish the small 22 auto on the market came with double stacked mags cause I would like one as a bug.

The way I see its is most times anyone needs ton draw an fire everything is over in 2 to 3 shots no matter the caliber used but bigger is better. After about 5 or 6 shots the few time that get that far everyone has taken cover or they would have been hit. Seems to me more rounds becomes more important than high caliber at that point. So to me a high copasity 22 auto that is reliable an has a light slide would make a great BUG cause the odds of failure should be very low cause of low recoil an the fact that the odds of ever having to draw it would be almost none. But if more than 5 or 6 is actually needed then it is there with 20+ more.

useful considerations here.
I recently moved to a state where I can get a CC and now that I've been here long enough to qualify I'm looking for my first carry gun. my favorite handgun is my glock .45 full sized frame, but it's not really a carry size, so I've been considering my options. had been thinking about the chiappa rhino but have to find a place to try it before I buy one. then someone swayed my thinking towards staying with what I already shoot and know best, and looking at the baby glocks. probably going to shoot them back to back before I decide, but my first instinct on this was revolver for a lot of the reasons you mentioned.
thanks for ellaborating, that was useful.
and so this isn't a total thread jack - the same issues would apply to the OP. if they're going to have to use more shots than the revolver carries, or reload, there's probably a better solution for someone who's phyisically compromised, maybe involving thinks like moving to where they aren't going to have to engage in extended firefights.

my hubby shoots competition and he says "you can't miss fast enough to make up time." I'm thinking this applies in real life self defence as well... if someone is closing on you, you'd better not be missing because they may be able to close the distance faster than you can shoot and miss and shoot some more, nevermind jam clearing or reloading.

I think the saying "slow is fast" applies.

No worries about thread jacking, its all good.

I have never lived in a CC state though I do travel. My home state an the two close neighbors are OC states. I do try to stay with CC capable guns for when the people at walmart get sheepy on me but I would hate to have to CC all the time. Just the idea of going out an having to ask "honey is my gun showing" would just bug me.

I was just going to write "In the pants" then thought it would only sound like a joke. I almost posted first, thought second (which is my normal MO). LOL

There are several very decent, in the pants holsters and I am blessed to have a local gal who makes holsters, custom. Actual custom. The hardest part is she keeps your gun for about a week, while making the holster up, to fit you and it.

I actually have a inside the waistband holster that I made from a kit.

Not 100% happy with it but not bad. OCing with my uncle mikes holster is still my normal carry method though.
