So, I'm beginning to question the wisdom of keeping chickens. The end of last week had me beginning to wonder if I hadn't become the very sphincter of the universe or something. Then Saturday morning this happened. I was really hoping to finish up the coop this weekend and transition the chicks out there next week. So much for that I guess.

After it stopped raining, I waited for it to dry up a bit. At about 10:15AM I walked out to try and get some sheathing on the coop. I quickly decided to climb down off of the coop b/c I thought some branches might come down. About two minutes after I got down and walked away, this happened:

I'm so sorry about it... good thing your jedi mind powers kicked in and you moved out of the way though... but it such a shame! Looks like you were making excellent progress.. You even had the cute little chicken ramp.

I am glad your chickens weren't inside though.

I'm guessing you are the luckiest man alive -- with the luckiest chicks ever!!! Five minutes either way and you could been toast. Had those chicks been in there I doubt many of them would have made it out. If I were you I'd go buy a lottery ticket -- all you've lost here is some time (and a few boards.)

Well look at it this way, if you were truly the sphincter of the universe either you or your chickens would have been in it. So sorry about your loss, but so glad it wasn't more. Good luck on the re-build!

Well, spincterism is entirely underrated. It looks like most of the wood is still intact, or at least unbroken. A little chainsaw action, a little beer action, and you are back in business. Way to follow your gut instincts by the way. That takes decades to develop, and a few more to actually take action on them. Good job.

Really, I'm grateful no one was hurt and all that was lost was some coop framing. I suppose looking at the bright side of things, even though it's Aspen, I got some fire wood that I don't have to work too hard for. The darn thing is they were perfectly healthy trees and there are four Elms in that fence row that have Dutch Elm disease that I still have to get out of there. Another good thing, my wife doesn't care if I move the coop to the other side of the property now (where I've got the fence row cleaned out a little better).

Hmm... I would rebuild it right where it is. This would be a true test if your karma is balanced with the universe. If an Elm strikes twice, you know your in the S*&!.
