Even if it were legal -- I wonder whether people who recommend putting a live trapped skunk or coon in their truck have ever tried it. I don't want skunk spray or coon worms in my truck, thank you, even assuming I could safely get the cage in the truck without getting bitten or skunk spray on me. Those traps are not generally designed to handle them safely when a live animal is inside; it would take two people and a long pole, or a similar arrangement. That would be hard to do with a blanket over the top of the cage.

I don't have a problem with killing predators, when it is necessary. But I'd like for it to be taken seriously, and done as humanely as possible. I am not a fan of relocation as a general rule. It's your problem, no need to make it someone else's problem!
I feel that as a chicken farmer it is my job, my responsibility, to make the coops and runs predator proof. And if I set up a trap, you can be sure that I've thought it through, not catch a critter and then start thinking about the next step.
What has bothered me here is that it became a laughing matter, a big joke. The taking of ANY life needs to be well thought out, not a joke.

As for shooting a skunk if you can creep up and shoot it in the chest without disturbing it you have a chance of it not spraying. With rabies being a neurological disease it's best not to shoot a skunk (which can be a carrier of rabies) in the head though it sounds good when we're typing it. I'd disenfect the area of the dispatch, trap, tools etc with bleach/water solution afterwards.
If your going to drown the skunk in a garbage can,etc it'll work just fine- just be sure to have enough water and a large enough can to assure the whole cage will be covered when you slide it in and you'll be fine. Again, I'd disenfect the items used for dispatch afterwards. Might be unnecessary, but one of the main reason you'd be dispatching would be rabies concern as well as predator concerns.
Skunks are more an egg predator and pretty easy to keep away from your eggs if your working with an enclosed run. They are good diggers so you need to take precautions. I've released them from live traps by walking calmly up to the front of the cage and opening the trap door and proping it partially open with stick throug the wire on more than one occassion. I've caught 6 skunks and let 5 of them go just like this. If rabies were a big concern in my area I'd dispatch every skunk, but it hasn't been so we continue to live side by side. Releasing a skunk from a live cage demands respect, but it's more unnerving than anything else. Good luck, Keystonepaul

What about instead of drowning it putting it in a big tubberware box so it cant see and it won't fret and fill it with baking soda and peroxide so the skunk will just go to sleep just like people do with chickens.
