This isn't a personal attack on those working the petstore - more on the petstore for not providing training.

And yeah, the training stores provide is pathetic. The hardware store I worked at handed me a 10 page pamphlet for the department I was going in to. That pamphlet had about 5% useful information. The other 95% came from growing up with a contractor for a father. Which took me from sales associate to department manager in 4 months. As I said, the entry jobs are typically for folks who have no experience at anything. No store training is going to make up for that. Stores cant afford the overhead to train their employees adequately, too much overhead. So these folks get OJT. (on the job training) So any information you get you should check it out before applying it. Of course, that right there is solid advice for any situation.

This reminds me of when I was calling WM a few days ago and asked the girl working in dairy (which is where the eggs are sold) what the cost of free range and cage free eggs were (so I could gauge my prices) and she said. "We don't sell those here" and I asked if she was sure and she said "we only have regular eggs" and I said they were 'regular' eggs just some chickens are free ranged and some were not in battery cages. Still they "didn't have them". So I just called my bf who was helping out in dairy that day to get me the prices...I swear!

What do you expect from a minimum wage employee? If they really knew the products/species/whatever they wouldn't be working at petsmart/walmart. Now if you had asked for a humidity guage instead of a hygrometer they probably would have known right off the bat what you were talking about.

I knew about the products/species/whatever and I was working minimum wage. The problem with the big chain petstores is that they usually hire young people who know nothing. The thing that stinks about that is that the animals have to suffer.​

though, in defense of WalMart and the clerks who "don't know" --- as I was hunting for the Acu-Rite combo thermometer/hygrometer ... I started out in Hardware, couldn't find one, asked clerk who sent me to Garden; from there, after looking, I was directed to Pets, to Toys, to Electronics, to Housewares, before being sent back to Hardware .. where the clerk still said they didn't have one, go back to Garden ...

a similar product really WAS in Hardware, but on the side of an end of an aisle, near the floor and below a display of cellphone connectors ! ... go figure ...

I used to keep a probe-style indoor-outdoor digital thermometer with the probe hung inside the fridge in my RV, to keep an eye on the temp in there, since I don't run it on propane while we are underway .... I bet that would work fine in a 'bator too

I went into Loaf and Jug to buy a carton of cigs. I was told they didn't have any. So I asked if they had enough loose packs to make a carton. So she counted them and told me she had the exact amount left to make a carton,but couldn't sell them to me. Of course I asked why not. Her response was "because then we'd be out" I ended up having to drive clear across town to buy one. Talk about here's your sign!!

I have to stay away from pet stores because I always leave with something LOL. DH has banned it LOL. It really is the responsibility of the pet owner to research the animal they are purchasing. I agree that it would be helpful to have more experienced workers at pet stores especially because you are dealing with live animals but in the end it is the responsibility of the pet owner to understand the animal they are getting. Unfortunately we all know there are many impulse buys by irresponsible people all the time. At our petsmart when you buy a pet they do provide a pamphlet that explains basic care and housing for your new pet. Unfortunately it's not always enough.

I find the same thing at garden centers. People ask how to care for this or that plant, and the kid watering (or not watering) the flowers says he doesn't know or gives really bad advice. I wait til the kids moves to the other side of the store and give the poor older lady how to care for the plant.

It's such a waste to go to some of those centers and see half their stuff dried up cr*ppy looking.
