Had to get rid of the dog, he killed my chicken(s), maybe even cats?

You did the right thing..
Not cause he killed the birds.. but because he growled at and challenged you over his kill...

Well, I suppose you would have found traces of the cats if he killed them.

It's hard to make tough choices - especially ones that involve the heart.
I hope in time you will realise you did the right thing.

I don't like dogs growling at humans. Once had a dog that lunged at my one year old daughter.
Dog didn't last to the see the night. I felt awful - we had him since a gorgeous little fluffy pup.
BUT he was a dog, not a human. My family always takes precedence.

You definitely did the right thing. Food aggression is a sign of a dog that could begin to show aggression about other things. Since you didn't know the dog's previous history, you are waaay better off.

Thank you all so much for the support. I'm starting to feel more like I did the right thing, for everyone's sake.
I will post back later, when I have more time to write.

Good decision for all involved even if it was a tough one. Sorry for your losses. All of them.

I agree that you made the right decision. In my book, it would be easier to get rid of a stray that showed up than it would to get rid of our family dog that we've had for years. You really don't know the dog's history or background. You need to consider the safety of your family and the other animals on your place.

Very sad about your birds. And possibly your kitties

It 's understandable, your not keeping the dog. Hopefully the shelter can find him a home where there aren't other (small) pets - they need to advise prospective adopters of the special "situation" so nobody else gets hurt.
