Hair wrapped around toe! Help! *UPDATE* She is doing good!

Quote:
I didnt even know she had hair on her toe and when I took her to go play outside I saw her toe (around 5) I didn't have a vehicle during that time so I worked on trying to get it off since then. The hair is really stuck and I feel bad because I have really long hair and I didn't think about this happening to a chicken.. I would just like to know because I don't know if her toe is going to he on her foot much longer. Trust me I have tried to get that hair off.

I kinda wish I knew more about chickens.

Well...if the toe falls off.. you stop the bleeding. Pressure until it stops.
Dont worry about antibiotics tonight.... all the stores are closed... FIRST thing you need to do is get the hair off. then handlle it from there...

Can you very honestly describe what it looks like. Is it red and swollen? Black and oozy? The better you can really tell us the better we can try to help.

Are you trying to get the hair off now..or typing on here? You should be working on the chickens foot until the hair comes off..
Have you tried the end of a needle like someone suggested? WHAT exactly are you doing now to get it off?
Just wondering...

I have long hair too, and a few years ago the same thing happened to me, but with one of my baby fancy rats. It was really terrible, because I did not see the hair until it had been on long enough for the toe to turn purple. It was very traumatic for all of us. I hope that you end up able to get the hair off. Good luck.

If the toe has not turned black then there is still a chance to save it but not unless you get the hair off. Even if you poke the toe or it gets nicked it is still better to get it off...unless it has turned black. Has it?

I'm on an iPod. Multitasking.

Been following with growing angst... I saw other threads where people were able to do surgery by covering the chickens head with a towel or sock and laying it on its side. Do that and use a toothpick and tweezers to pick that hair off. I'm wondering if it isn't already too late and you now need info on how to treat the affected toes?

Good night kiddo. I'll say a prayer that the little one makes it and a prayer for you too so you can get through this. "If God brings you to it he will get you through it'.

Take a deep breath and think and stay calm and everything will be alright.

Whatever you do don't be hard on yourself....give yourself some slack. Accidents happen.

I probably shouldn't tell the world this but last week my 50 year old husband had a big bandage on his hand. I asked him what happened and he said 'nuthin'. Come to find out he was using the weed wacker in an improper way and weed wacked his hand. He was being lazy and trying to do something quicker than he usually does. Well I'm not a quiet woman and I'm also a nurse. If it's stupid and causes an injury I've seen it.

I read him the riot act and told him if he ever did anything so stupid again I would chase his a-- with the weed wacker and then he'll need bandages alright.

It's kind of like your Mom saying 'if you don't stop running around and break your arm don't come running to me!"

Next time I'll tell you about the guy using a snow blower on his roof and what happened to him.
