Hair wrapped around toe! Help! *UPDATE* She is doing good!

JP101010 said it best. Please don't let that little chick suffer.

Do you have a magnifying glass? If not are there any 24 hour Wal-Marts near you?

I would try the Nair idea. Nair is designed to be used on sensitive skin areas. The very worst I can see happening with it is making her skin a bit irritated but that is better than her losing a toe. Just keep her held while it is on so she can't peck at it and make sure you rinse it off good.

Wrap the chicken in a towel and get someone to help with holding the chicken if you need to. You can take the not pointed end of a straight pin and reach under the hair with the HEAD of the pin not the point. Then you can pull it up and out of the toe and clip it off. It may briefly not feel good to the chicken but it will be so happy to have it off that it won't matter long. You can't just wait for the toe to fall off as it will take a long time to do that. If will not just suddenly fall off. It will swell more and throb as it gets even tighter on the hair, then the circulation slowly gets shut off then the flesh of the toe starts to die. If infection starts to set in your chicken can die from that so you can see that a little bit of hurt now will not be so bad.

ETA: I really like the idea of using Nair but if you don't have any you have to do something with what you have.

I while back you said you tried soaking it in water and could find one of the ends of the hair but didn't know which way to unwrap it because it was in a figure 8 pattern and wrapped every which way. Try it again and using a tweezer try to unwrap it. If it gets tighter as you try just go the other way.

I think it was mentioned before but I would think your best bet is a pair of tiny manicure scissors. Cut the hair one layer at a time.

Everyone on this forum is super nice and I'm sure if someone was close they would try to come out.

Well can someone tell me what to do if it her toe comes off? I would really like to be prepared and I am still trying to get the hair off

Ok, I'm trying to be understanding here, but seriously... You have to do SOMETHING besides giving reasons for why you can't try different solutions. It is horrendously cruel to let the chick's toe basically rot off without trying everything possible to get the hair off. This is something that you have to deal with- if you can't handle causing small distress to get the hair, do you have a husband/boyfriend/parent/friend who can do it? If you're this squeamish about getting the hair off, I can tell you that you will not want to deal with a rotting, open mess where the toe was- not to mention keeping it clean. A infection in a toe that falls off can very easily kill your bird, and I know that would break your heart. I know you mean well, it is always hard to do things that we think will hurt our animals- but part of being an animal owner is doing what must be done to take care of your pet's wellbeing.
