We hatch twice a month. Was 3 times of month before sales dropped. If 30 hatch in a good batch, we have at least 10 males out of it.In the past year, I've slaughtered 34 roosters. Around here, no one wants them except to eat. Most people have too many roos. So to freezer camp they go. After all that organic food we fed them, we need to get something back. I currently have 8 sexually mature roos (5 are in a bachelor pad), 2 that are 20 weeks but haven't started jumping hens yet and 6 that are almost 3 weeks old (sex linked). So I have more slaughtering to do soon.
Like you said, nobody wants roos. if I close my eyes and count a ball park figure. My guess 26 males in all. Counting my Main Breeders first of course because of it's obvious. 6 houses/6 roos. Caged back up boys @ 4. That leaves 16 of the total freedom flock.. Oh.. oppsie... the sales pen has several juvinile roos I forgot about. Just under 39/40.. I should check our banding records.
Anyway, 6 sturdy adults have made it to the top of the to be subtracted list..
Hens? OMG
