Heart of Dixie
3:30 this morning we got 3+ inches of rain. Several chicks were killed, but some were wet, dirty and shivering. We have brought them in and rinsed under warm running water. They are in a pool with wood shavings and a heat lamp now. Soft, low chirping with some on their haunches and some lying on their sides. Is there a way to dry them off more quickly--like using a blow dryer? And would pedialyte help to boost their energy? All are between 3-4 weeks old. They are too old to stay in past their rejuvenation/drying point (can fly), so I'd like to give them a boost before they go back out this afternoon. Can't go to town b/c of infant with fever to pick up anything, so home remedies would be ideal.
thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Yes you can use a hair dryer set on low, or a heat lamp etc. If you give them pedialite make sure it is the kind with out iron. You could also give the sugar water for energy.

Cheeping has decreased and more are up and stumbling around. We will blow-dry after lunch and replace the water with pedialyte. Thanks for your help.

Blow dryer and also hot water filled in ziplock bags placed next to them like a hot water bottle to boost temperature. Keep rubbing them with a towel, the rubbing helps stimulate them. Also put vitamins it warm water for them to drink. If you can inject it just under the skin it can help too.

The heat lamp did the trick (mostly). we were going to blowdry after lunch, but they were dry and fluffed except around their heads where I did not wash so good because I was afraid of getting water in the nose and ears. The hot water bottle is a good idea I'll have to keep in mind for next time. They liked the unflavored pedialyte, too. Thanks for the ideas and help.
