HALLOWEEN Hatch-a-Long 2016 w/ Hosts, Mike, Sally & BantyChooks

Well, I have some bad news... My little Singleton silkie/cemani mix chick was found dead in the brooder. It was drinking and eating, also getting tons of gentle attention so it wouldn't be lonely. So, I have no idea what caused its death.

On another less depressing note there are 7 Salmon Faverolle and 2 Millie Fleur d'Uccle eggs in the incubator. It is too early to get a definite fertile or not candling. Maybe in a day or two, but probably won't candle until closer to the weekend.

I'm sorry. I hate when one dies. Especially if I don't know why. I am always scared that it's something contagious and they all are going to follow. But here a necropsy is $160.

:hugs I suppose it's possible. I just think tomatoes are too soft.

Walked outside just now to the coop and back and on the way back found one of our slw cockerals dead in the yard with no apparent cause. He was not stiff and had no injuries that I could see, other than being a little thin. Of course it had to be probably the nicest one of the four we are growing out. Ugh. Darn.

Came out carrying an egg from our legbar and saw that, boy did it rain on my parade.

Only two things I can think are I had just thrown them a bunch of large tomatoes did he choke on a bite, possibly get in a scuffle over one that I didn't see or hear and have his neck broken??? I'm thinking maybe he choked because he was happily eating with the rest of the flock when I walked away to go into the cooler coop.

Is this possible? What's the likelihood that he would just drop dead of no reason?

Thank you guys yeah idk I hate not having answers. I know theyre eating and drink and stuff and he had no visible symptoms and his crop felt fine. He was a pretty big boy. I wish I could do the necropsy or rather have it done but I'm in WI and they're 100+$ which we just can't afford. His siblings have all been drinking and eating today and all of them have always been very active and adventurous. His nose and eyes looked perfectly clear. It's just sad BC they're from Laura Kershaw lines and are stunning beautiful birds and I really think he was the best.

I hate not having answers. Usually we at least have answers. There wasn't any noise or anything he was maybe 10-15 feet off the back porch just laying in the middle of the yard on his side. I actually walked up and nudged him with my foot BC he looked like he could have been sun bathing but of course he wasn't.
