Halloween Hatch Along - Setting Oct. 10th

I set 5 d'Uccle eggs last night. Good luck everyone.

Hi mstricer,

I've just acquired a young trio of MF Barb D'Uccles that I aim to breed from in the future. Anything I should be aware of going in? I must admit it was a snap purchase as we saw their parents strutting their stuff and couldn't resist so I haven't done as much research as I normally would. Grateful for any advice you could offer.

Quote: I love mine. It took my a long time to get started, and I'm just learning. I'm going to take a leap and take 3 of them to Nationals in Columbus Ohio. I know it is dumb, as I have never shown before. I plan on taking a Mille and maybe obtaining a nice unrelated rooster or cockerel. # one thing is, keep them secure, I hatched out 15 eggs that turned out to be a Marans mix, my girls had to be submissive to not to have been squashed. Hawks love the Blue Mottled, they get them every time. I can't wait to separate they by variety, they will be small groups, I have just enough cottages for 4 different varieties. If you want we can learn together.

Well, I tried to chase down the mail man this morning, but gave up. My husband then went out and found him (he says he's the wizzard, LOL) and so I've just set them in the incubator. 24 eggs, LOL. OMG, my new big 'bator is full!

Castle Delights Seramas writes her Roo's name one each egg and when it was laid. This is realy cool, 'cause, if you can possibly keep track, you can know exactly who the parents are for each chick! I numbered each egg and wrote it's father's name and date laid and then the condition of the egg's air sac.

So as I'm doing this, I get to number 13. I wonder, should I skip that number for luck? Then remembered that this was the Halloween hatch, so I had to use the number 13! So I said to the pile of wrapped eggs in front of me "who wants the honor of being #13? And took one at random, OMG, I almost died laughing! It turned out to be the one dirty one I got! A big smudge on him (the others were so clean!)

So now I'm expecting it to be a boy and a real hell raiser!

He better hatch!!! He's from Nicol / Noah, laid 10/6 with a good air sac! LOL

Only 6 loose air sacs out of 24 eggs (6 extra eggs!!!) I'm really hopeful they will do well. The only problem is, when they all have parents, they become more "real" and I know I'm gonna morn any that don't start or die more so than an anonymous egg

Lmaooo I love reading and hatching with you all. Lol

my eggs finally arrived this afternoon. : ) so much for priority mail. These poor babies traveled for 6 days. Geese... I hope any of them make it. I set 21 already because their laid dates were already too far out.

then I set aside 10 poopie ones to set tomorrow in a separate incubator. I don't have the heart to toss them for being dirty, but I also don't want them to contaminate all of my other eggs either. So, one batch is in a styrofoam little giant I had a great hatch in 3 months ago. The other clutch is in my new fancy schmancy Brinsea Octagon 20 with auto humidifier and auto turning cradle ... gifted to me by a sweet chicken friend because she never wanted me to have to use that styrofoam one again. Lol

so much for an easy breezy 21 days ahead. HERE WE GO!

xoxo Annmarie

Just because they're poopy shouldn't cause any trouble. Unless the egg looses it's protective coating, or is very thin, bacteria shouldn't enter the egg. I'm glad you're not throwing them away! They should be fine!

I'm really wondering how in the world I can keep track of which chick comes out of which egg! I mean, even if I watched and noted who came from where, how do I remember? can I put a tiny cable tie on their little feetsies? Can I put some fingernail polish on their leg/foot/toe to mark them? There are only so many colors in food coloring, LOL.
