Halloween ~ Hatch Day!

Jamie821...awesome tip!

Arghhhh

I can't get my temp to stabilize in my hatcher! I thought I had it last night and then overnight it dropped to 95. So I set up a space heater in the area where my hatching bator is and it wen't up to 102...and that was inside the wiggler! The other one was 104 for the air temp. It will be such a miracle if these chicks hatch!

Okay, done freaking out....I'm taking the wiggler out (it holds the temp too long and it's taking too long to see minor adjustments) I'm adding the extra water to bump up the humidity, I'm gonna say lots-o-prayers and hopefully in the AM set these babies in the hatcher!

AHHHHHHH....I am so nervous!!

WHY WHY WHY did I do this???? I am only down to 5 eggs out of 12 shipped and I *think* 1 is a quitter.

I just want 1 to make it....just one....

Someone please...come hold my hand ... HA HA

OK...

now...

I went to the feed store today and against all recommendations I purchased a Little Giant. Plugged it in and followed the directions...crank all the way up wait for them to go to 101 and then back down until the light goes off.......still holding 101!!!

I keep waiting for something crazy to happen since everyone says they are a pain but...nothing???

My styrobator temps have such a HUGE swing with the thermostat that I am worried that is a big issue...anyway! I will be getting more eggs this week and trying out the Little Giant and I am more confident than with the home made one. The concept is great but the thermostat is late to respond which gives a big swing

What kind of bators do you guys have? I have a vent hole on the top of mine but I am afraid to pull it open for fear it won't shut again. Yikes!

So you are saying that we shouldn't open the bator to put water in...for the last 3 days??? To use the vent hole instead?

I am very nervous too. I am down to 5 silkies & I looks bad again....UGH! My own bantams are doing great though....not that I need anymore of them....

Ok, I checked out the vent hole....simple! I don't know what I was worried about....

Got the straw & syringe rigged up. Should work like a charm!

BTW....we are getting snow!

No dont open your bator unless it catches fire. The last days of hatching are critical. When you open the bator all your moist warm air leaves takes awhile for it to build back up and in that lenghth of time you can dry out the membranes of the remaining eggs. The chick will not be able to turn in the egg to zip and it will die in the egg shell and you wont know it has happened.

The vent holes on the top should be open the last 3 days. The chicks need more air before and during hatch.

I have an LG with an added PC fan, by the way..

<edit> The last 3 days of the hatch, the only reason you should open the bator is to put water in it. If you can find another way to do it, then that's even better. You might also need to open it if there is a chick or chicks that have been hatched for a while, and no others pipping. The chicks can get dehydrated really quickly in the hatcher. About 24 hours is tops for them to stay in the hatcher.
