Halloween ~ Hatch Day!

I'm supposed to have a birthday party on Nov.1st and I almost don't want to...what if my babies are still hatching!

I buy it! I do! I just bowed out of a Halloween Party because well, my turkeys will be hatching. Makes total sense to me but then do crazy people KNOW they're crazy?

OMG they are beautiful! I was considering the buff rocks, but how do the partridge rocks lay? Are they good eggs layers? Congratulations.....

& now I am going to go candle & hopefully get some pics.

They are not as thoroughly developed for egg laying as the barreds and buffs and whites. The color hasn't been well sponsored for quite some time.

I like the color so much they're my primary project. The show lines are rare and not particularly productive. So I'm just going to work toward a high quality, better producing PR. The four major flocks of show PR's were combined, sold and culled to significantly fewer birds. I've located the biggest group and will ask for eggs but I'm hearing none or few of the folks holding SQ PRs had any decent fertility or hatch this last year.

So I went over the available articles on the establishment of the breed. And I'll work my way through improving this group with the original birds that developed it and if I CAN adding SQ or heritage quality stock when I find them.

Cyns Barred Rocks are the beginning of that project. They'll help me improve this lot for size, quality and production. Partridge cochins for better color and feather. Etc.

More information than you asked for, but they're dear to me. I think they're gorgeous and I think it's a shame that there aren't that many real flocks of them any more.

After getting all males my first try. Grrr. This batch had better have some pullets in it. And I've been talking to the bator about producing pullets several times a day.

Could you maybe post some pics of the older ones? I would love to see them. I saw some pics of Cyn's & they are gorgeous! Aren't they like blue rocks or something? I have never seen such color before!

I hope you get all girls this time!

I hope the buff rock are good layers like some say they are.

I just candled the lot. 2 had blood rings. Both nothing more than scrambled egg in the middle. (Opened them)

Several were still almost clear and I marked them.

I'm down to about half with what looks like only one possibility of poult. One has a free moving air cell, so I think that one's toast, it's also mostly clear. At least the kitchen is full of peepers.

I just candled again this time using the big guys powerful flashlight! LOL It worked much better than that can light. Scrap the can light!

I could see some swimmers! I still have the 2 that look like water, a couple that may be blood rings but not sure yet. One of the bantie eggs I wasn't sure about either. So all in all, I think I may have 8 Silkies & about 5 banties to hatch.....I hope.

Was wondering, can I use the watery looking eggies for the nest boxes as a lure?

or whatever you call it....a dummy egg.

That is called recycling! Or should I dump them, I am quite sure they are just nothing eggs, they look like water filled eggs.

Also wondering....since I set the eggs at night in the bator, does that mean they will start hatching at night?

YAY for chickies!!! DH took the LED flash light to work

so .... can't see mine

I wouldn't keep the egg. There has to be SOMETHING in it and it will get stinky. Get golf balls...they don't go bad

The may hatch Halloween night but there is a bigger window...usually day 18-23...I have heard chicks hatching any of those days due to temps being a little high or low etc.

Never know!!!

CK Chickadilly---If you set your eggs at night, you count that day as '0', the next as day 1. Technically they should start hatching at night, but I have not had any hatch when they were supposed to yet! It's just hit and miss for me!

I have noticed that my humidity drops big time during the night. The temp stays ok. ?? Yeah, I wonder when these guys are going to make their appearance. I can't wait! I think I am only going to get 8 silkies out of 14.....

I guess it better than none! Right?

Yeah, golf balls!
