stop turning them on the eighteenth day> I put mine it at night so on the eighteenth day at about the same time I take them out of the turner. You will find in a short time they will usually start rocking that is the chick turning in the egg. Dont be surprised if they start pipping on day nineteen mine always do but may not zip for awhile. Forgot to tell yall to put on your list nerve pills for yourself.

also after thought make sure your brooder has a cooler location just in case the chicks get to warm. I have my light on one end and the thermometer in the botton and keep it at 95. The other end of the brooder is cooler that way the chicks get in the place that they are comfortable. Most chicks die the first days from to hot of temps and dehydrating. Every week after you put them in the brooder reduce your temp 5 degrees till you get to around 70 degrees. Also dont forget to teach each one how to drink water. Remember we are their mommies.

I can only get the unmedicated chick starter as well. The medicated has a preventative for cocci added to it. I only give cocci meds to chicks or adults that I have bought and brought home. My birds have never had it.

Also, make sure you still turn the eggs on the 18th day. At the beginning of the 19th day is when you want to stop turning. Unless you have birds like mine, that always hatch early!

I plan on putting momma and the babies in a dog crate out in the shed. I also plan to have a light in there for extra warmth too. Should I worry because there are no sides on the dog crate and it might get drafty, or will Momma keep them safe enough?

I might even bring them in when they are 3 days old, because momma's underneath is totally disgusting and needs to be washed! (she has been broody for 3 months)
I figure this way, she can get totally dry inside before going back out to the shed.

its fixing to get cold there mommy will keep them warm but i would put a tarp or something up so the cold wind wont blow in.

I am now down to 6 silkies. The banties look fine so far.

Why are they quitting? What makes them quit?

Yes, the weather has gotten very windy & cold here. Better batten doiwn the hatches or we will blow away!

I do not like this weather!
