At what age is the average for Silver Spangled Hamburgs to lay? We have one Pullet that is about 16 weeks old, and she is doing this odd behaviour of sorta letting her wings droop just a bit, bobbing her head and sorta shimmying lol She acts fine other wise, eating, drinking, feces is normal, just these little dances lol She is our bug catcher, she will go racing across the run to grab a cricket, its so funny to watch her. I guess she is a SS Hamburg (that is what I was told anyway, here is a pic of her)

and here is a cute butt shot of her and one of the Buff Orp Pullets

All chickens are different even within the same breed. I would guess a month MOL.

My SS Hamburg is my favorite chicken! She's gorgeous, really smart, hops up in your lap and does not suffer in silence, if things don't go her way.
I also have Red Leghorn, Cuckoo Maran, Silkies and SP Wyndottes and they are all 21 weeks old now.
Strangely, the Maran laid first, at just under 19 weeks. They all free-range all day and the Maran, Marge, goes back into the coop to lay in the nest. Even her first egg

Last night my suspicion got the better of me. How come the supposedly "early maturing" chickens lay so much later?? I did a "butt-check" on all my girls and... yep, the Leghorn and Hamburg ARE laying. Just where?

That also explains why our Beagle, Elsa, who free-ranges all day with the chickens, is in need of a diet... we've been wondering why she's gaining weight...

The girls are locked in the run as of today... Eggs need to go IN NESTS!
