is it better to handfeed or feederfeed?

Hi,

To the best of my knowledge, chickens should always have food available, so a feeder is necessary. But they do love being hand-fed extra goodies as treats! I'm sure there's no harm done except maybe spoiling your chickens! Genie

Hi,

My own chickens have their laying pellets aailable all the time, but as soon as they see me coming through the gate they get very excited knowing I always have treats with me. They go nuts, and one of them bounces against the door until I open it.

We have real fun, If I have a slice of bread they love to rip chunks off it and then they run off to stop poachers stealing it, they are such fun.

When the treats are gone, they come back to nip at my rings, gloves, my jacket, and even a nice fluffy scarf I have.

They love being hand fed, but their basic feed is always there, they just ignore it if there is something more interesting around, then they go back to it. Vegetables, yogurt, fruit, even sultanas cause excitement, and they love spaghetti. It is so funny to watch them eating it too.
Hope you get to enjoy it again soon.

And WELCOME.

Jena.

It's really a combo type of feeding if you really want friendly birds....mine are fed with a hanging feeder to provide feed at all times. However, the treats fed by hand will make your flock alot of fun to be around....cause they will want to be around you!

Mine have food out all the time, my outdoor free rangers have a feeder that they always tip over. Then the henhouse has a hanging feeder. (I love because they dont tip that one over ). Mine still prefer me to come out once or twice a day and hand feed them the same exact food that they have out all the time. I don't know why. But since I enjoy just sitting and watching them I don't mind. I do have one Mary Jane that loves to grab anything I have on. Rings, my medical alert bracelet, pant leg you name it. She is only one that does that then looks at me like " what did I do that ? "
