Hand opening an unhatched Japanese Quail egg.

My pet Japanese Quails have laid 60 eggs which I've incubated to hatch.
59 eggs hatched normally in my homemade incubator.
This egg had reached the end of the incubation period with no signs of hatching or life.

So my husband took a chance and opened the egg to find the chick alive inside.
It wouldn't have survived without this.
This chick is now healthy and playing with the other chicks.
The chick was placed in a brooder and within 24 hour was up on it's feet, running around, eating and drinking fine.

OMG CONGRAGULATIONS!! 100% Hatch rate is really rare!! I only got 2 chicks out of 12. They are button quail and are really small.

I have been incubating silkies, this is a little off topic. I got 3 out of the 10 eggs. I candled the remainders and there was a full chick in one of the 6.... It's back in the incubator.

My question, how long did you give your chick (after it's due date) before your assist? My eggs were due on the 19th. The 3 we got, popped out yesterday, the 20th.... Should we give it a hand or just acknowledge the natural selection type thing.... I don't hear any peeping from the egg...

For mine, most hatched out by themselves but 1 couldn't, so we helped it out. It is currently fine. I think your chick might be dead. my eggs always move around and you can see them breathing(the egg moving up and down). I gave my chicks 2 days, but by then they were almost dead ;( Hope urs hatch

Thank you! I suppose we can't hurt it at this point, since I'm about give up on it. I thought I saw it moving but it might just have been wishful thinking...
