Handling chickens

we handled our chick a lot when they were young and even when they were old enough to run around in the yard. In fact, our Buff Orpington Rooster "Romeo" used to hop up in my lap if I patted my knee and told him to jump up---but not anymore. None seem to want to be held. If I sit on the ground and give them treats, I can usually scoop one up, and they will tolerate it, but they don't seem to want to be held. They do follow me all around and come running when they see me. We try to go in the coop each night when they are roosting and pet them for a few minutes. They don't seem to mind it too much.
