Hands on hatching and help

I only hatched two guineas and have 4 more that are 3 weeks old. They sure grow fast. The 2 new guineas are very small and the one with the belly button is silver and one of the 3 weeks old was half white when it was born. Mama and Pappa were Pearl Grey. I was surprised to get the silver and the white one. Thanks for the info.

Could you post pictures of the keets? I could probably tell you what their colors are actually called :) Silver's not a real color name and real white isn't possible unless one of the parents was pied or white, since that's how the gene works in guineas.

Speaking of keets, my pinto eggs went into lockdown today. They'll hatch anywhere from Friday through Sunday. Wish me luck for a good hatch!

Oh man this reminds me, I have eggs in the incubator that I need to give back to a broody.

About a week ago I was collecting eggs to ship. Picked them up, took them home, let them sit out overnight and did nothing with them. Went to pack them up that afternoon, was candling them to check that they were all fine to send, and found that four of them had embryos in them. Apparently a broody had taken that nest and I didn't know. They didn't look dead so I put them in my incubator. Well, they're alive and well and I need to give them back, lol. Better do that tomorrow.

I'm a newbie here but I've been keeping chickens for about 6 years. This is my 2nd time incubating and again, I have pips that are getting rolled around by the early hatchers. Should I take them out and re-set the pips? Should I candle to see where the others are at? If I do that, when should I?

Its really a personal preference. Some say it doesn't hurt them to get rolled (momma hens continue to move eggs around too), but I have also seen the pip hole get closed up and they die (not common though).

Same answer for removal of chicks, its really a personal preference. Most of us on this thread remove chicks fairly quickly after hatch, usually whenever there is a break in the hatching action. Early if there is any danger (exposed fans, bowls of water, etc). But they can also stay in there for several hours.

The key to both of these is keeping humidity up! Don't leave the lid off too long, do it as quickly and carefully as you can, and there shouldn't be any problems.

Candling can also be done at the same time, just do it quick and move on.

Whatcha got cookin'??

The first picture is the Keet with the brown stripe down its back and is about 3 days old and the 2nd one is 3 weeks old. It has stripes of white on its wing, didn't stay as white as it was. The silver colored Keet pictures are to come! They stay under mamas heating pad most of the day except when they eat and drink. Good luck for a great hatch. I have 2 Silkie eggs in lockdown, should hatch in a couple of days. Papa has a big grey tail but all my Silkies are Bantam Bearded White Silkies,
