Hands on hatching and help

Did you turn the egg over so that the pip is facing up?
Could you get photos of both pips?
Its probably best to assume that they pipped overnight, so it would be a good idea to make a rough estimate based on that assumption. As long as we can ensure both babies are able to breathe okay, it is safe to wait
Since my last post a lot has happened, here's my reply to different thread.
I'm an idiot. Our two dogs had not shown any interest in the chicks in the incubator whatsoever, so I stupidly thought it would be ok to leave them in the same room together.
The whole incubator got knocked on to the floor, with chicks and eggs everywhere. They were all very cold, but amazingly all still alive, although weak. They are now back in the incubator, and seem to be doing a lot better now that they are warm again.
Is there anything that I should be aware of after this? Apart from just hoping for the best, that is.
There's no need to tell me how stupid it was to leave them to together, as I'm fully aware what an idiot I am, and there's no one to blame except me.
One of the chicks I was worried about has hatched, (and was one of the chicks that got cold) and I've lost track which the other egg was. It may have hatched, or it might be one of the last three that I'm still waiting on.
At this point I'm just playing it by ear, and expecting to have to assist them, as they are showing signs of getting shrink wrapped.
Thank you for helping, I think I'll just have to see how it goes.

Thats a really unfortunate turn of events, dont be too hard on yourself though, we all make mistakes!
I'm sure they'll do fine. Do keep an eye on them all, as they warm up and recover.
Best of luck with the rest of your hatch, be sure to update! :hugs

@BelovedBirds all the chicks that made it past lockdown (two died around day 17) have hatched!
I am amazed how tough both the young chicks and unhatched eggs are. They were on the floor for around half an hour, and the room temp is only around 18 degrees C. Two of the eggs got very cracked, as well.
They are now with their adopted broody hen and are looking very happy.
And I'm happy because despite all the mistakes I made (and there was a lot) out of 12 shipped eggs I've got 7 healthy chicks.

Thats wonderful news!! Congrats on your chicks!!

Hi,
It has been 2.5 days from internal pipping and 1.5 days from safety hole. I opened it a bit and it started bleeding a bit just while applying the coconut oil to keep the membrane moist. I didn't even pierce the membrane I believe. I was very gentle but I was using a soft paintbrush since q tip was too big, and maybe some brush filament pierced the membrane, i don't know. Is it too much blood? Does it look bad to you?
I'm leaving it alone for now since it's clearly so not ready to hatch. I feel horrible just for having opened the shell a bit :'(

Update: It just hatched out just fine on its own, but it looks a lot weaker than the rest. I have given it a couple drops of water. Any advice for weaker chicks? It seems exhausted the poor thing

I also have some questions in general:

1. What can I do in this situation to help the eggs hatch when the air sac is so small? Give them security holes after internal pipping?

2.About shrink wrapping. How long do you have to open the incubator for shrink wrapping? Humidity going down to 40%-50% after opening for a few minutes can produce shrink wrapping? Or I shouldn't worry too much about it? Also, can it happen before external pipping or just after?

3. How bad is for the eggs to take them out to monitor them right now every day? It's impossible to know when internal pipping has happened without taking them out and candling/listening to them.

4. How much time is it normal to pass between these stages: internal pipping - external pipping - unzipping - hatching, for quail eggs? (She said those times are general for most breeds but so I'm taking those, but I ask in case someone has more specific info about quail in particular)

If you have nutri drench, give it a couple of droplets on tip of beak and watch it drink before giving a couple more, if you don't have nutri drench, try the same thing with raw yolk. Dip your finger in and then put a drop in tip of beak and watch it drink.

is it out yet?
Is the beak making chewing/yawning motions? That would indicate yolk left being absorbed.
Looks like the veins are mostly absorbed around the air cell now which is good.

Dont worry, you haven't really done anything wrong, it is taking longer than usual. Is your thermometer calibrated? Doesnt look too bad, a little bleeding can be okay. Once the chick is out, try some nutridrench or yolk mixed in its water to give it some strength.

Yes, it is out. The blood ended up drying and the chick finished hatching on its own. It even unzipped despite the hole.

I gave it sugar water and also to some other ones I helped hatching and looked weak. Also I offered a bit of boiled yolk. But today (day 2) some of the chicks started having diarrhea. I hope it wasn't because of that. Since I had no answers by then I looked up and some people suggested doing that so I did. Would it have been better to give it some yolk? Or watered down yolk as you said?

Thanks. It hatched before your answer but so that I know, you meant to give it to it while he was in the egg or after hatching or both?
