Hands on hatching and help

Aaawwww!!!!! I got some eggs from Ruby and all of them are growing. I had one quitter but 100% fertility in shipped eggs from New York to Georgia.

Can I have her and cross her with my Ayam Cemani!!!!!

The ones I just hatched are sold already (being picked up this evening, I hate to see them go!) but I have plenty of LO eggs if you want to try some more shipped ones!

I wonder what a AC/LO cross would look like? Hmmm

I'm not keeping any of the chicks. Wish I could ship to you! Isn't it nice to know who lays which egg? I have figured out which eggs my one pretty paint one lays. They are really white-ish and smooth and shiney. Then over the weekend I was looking in the run and I saw one girl standing in the very corner where the 2x4's meet. She had her face pushed into the corner like she was in a time out. I was thinking "what the heck is this chicken doing?". I opened the door and stepped in, just in time to see her pushing out the egg. It was gross and cool at the same time! It was actually wet when it came out. I picked it up and in seconds it dried right before my eyes. Very interesting!

I still have not seen one lay an egg either!

After the happy post yesterday, I have unfortunate news. I went out to bring them in right before sundown last night and found blood all over the ramp that led into their pond. I checked all the babies and they all appeared fine. However, the pure white ancona that hatched was acting extremely lethargic and couldn't even keep it's head up. By this morning, it had passed. After looking closely at it I noticed it had blood around it's mouth. My only conclusion to this is that the blood outside must have come from this duckling coughing it up.

Now this was one that had bacteria in the egg and I've heard that bacteria can kill a chick all the way up to 14 days old. Does anyone have experience with this or heard of a chick hemorraging blood like that before?

No. Some of them feel chalky. Know what I mean?

Ok, so I knew last night that one of the remaining 2 green eggs were gone. It didn't look right and there was a clear spot at the bottom that shouldn't have been there so I decided to open the top. Oh yeah. It died before absorbing the yolk and is filled with excess fluid, (which I expected). Well I tilted it so I could see down the side and the little guy had pipped upside down-right into all that fluid. He didn't have a chance. I haven't done a full eggtopsy yet because my son likes to do them with me and he was asleep, so we'll be doing that here in a few.

I decided to investigate the other egg and candle that to see what I could see and when I picked it up there was a beak sticking out of the bottom! At first I though it had broke through and died, but when I touched the beak it moved, so I widened it, made sure the beak was clear of the excess fluid and turned it so the egg was upside down but the chick was right side up and put it in a cut down carton. Hopeing some of the fluid will now evaporate and he'll have a chance. He seems REAL strong, so I am pulling for him. Doesn't look like a nn though.

All but one Spitz is out and in the brooder. 4 silkies out , 8 pipped 2 not doing anything. And the 2 that hatched from the green eggs. So 12 in the brooder and hoping to add another 10 before it's over. Halfway into day 20, so another 24+ hours before hatch day has come and gone.

I got some pics in the brooder so they are on their way. Still have some fluffing up to do, but these guys are awesome. Thank you so much @RubyNala97 ! These little ones are so sweet!

I was just about to message you for an update!! I'm so happy the hatch is going good. My son likes me to wait for him to do the eggtopsies too. Can't wait to see more pics!

Even a quick warm bath couldn't get it all off, so I guess we wait for it to rub off. I think he's the smallest one yet.

I recommend to only make a hole in the egg and pull on the feathers and if it moves then do nnot help naymore. i have learned this the hard way many times and i have found it is the best way to elp the chick.

Sorry about the quitters, but you are still having a great hatch, especially the shipped ones!

I opened all 4 of my mutts last night (mostly wanted to see what color they would have been). They were all 4 well-developed, 2 had much absorbed yolks and were in pipping position, but I think they just didn't lose enough moisture and all drowned. A couple just made it a day or so longer than the others. I believe I would have to treat them like BCMs and run very (VERY) low humidity. Maybe even try hatching them with no water, or at least not putting them into the hatcher until the final day. I also had that temp spike, which didn't seem to affect the lavenders, but it could have affected these guys (maybe their location in the hatcher), so I'm not ruling that out as possible cause.

The veins around the membrane were still very sharp in a couple of them also, which surprised me!

Oh, it looks like they would have all been white chicks, and 3 of the 4, I could see the feathers on the legs, so they may have looked a lot like my light brahma.

I disagree. Each assist is different and should be treated as such. And the reasoning for assist will play a big part of the chances of the chicks. Thus the reason for the thread, for people who are hands on and want to help and find the best way possible to help.

I am supposed to do another hatch with these green eggs for my sister. I was going to throw some Spitz in for her too, but after seeing how hard it is for the eggs from my second nn is too loose moisture, I am only setting the greens and running completely dry.
