Hands on hatching and help

Polish are hard. Promise it's not just you.. (won't ask what you were charged, but as a reference, I charge 7$ for my WCB bantam, and 15-25$ for Tolbunt..will charge the 7$ for my BBS when I start those as well)..

But..polish are prone to head injuries, bc of the vaulted skull.. I also always moisten their feed so that it's easier for them to eat.
My biggest issue is hatching them, once I get them hatched, they usually do fine. . But hatching...man.. it's like actual work.. I think that big ol' vault gets them stuck and they can't get their head maneuvered right to zip. . And sometimes not even to externally pip..
ETA: the one flipping over..that sounds like a head injury.. even just the smallest peck on the head can do it. Sometimes the symptoms look like wry neck, sometimes it looks neuro, buy almost always caused by an injury to their head.
The first silkie out of my Ruby hatch that had a vaulted head I had to help at zip. The begining of the zip went down instead of around and I pulled it to help got all around the egg and it still couldn't get his head up. I was like wth. I had to zip under the head to free it. Once I had the head up I started laughing and said now I see...lol Big ole vault was stuck.

Oh, fine! Something else for Blooie to worry about.

LOL. No worries, you just help the little buggers out.  I ended up with 5 out of the 12 that had vaults and only a couple that really needed help cause their head was stuck.

Yeah, not all silkies are vaulted, I mark mine at hatch bc it's harder to tell once they're adults who hatched with and who without.. but I never breed vaulted to vaulted in silkies (I try not to breed vaulted at all, but they always have the best crests).. but all polish are vaulted. .
I hover over my hatcher when there's polish or silkies in there.. I lost too many, just "letting nature take its course".. we bred them this way and I think it's our responsibility to assist them when it's a trait we pushed for causing them to have problems. .I actually just zipped one and got his head free..he popped out like "**** woman, what took u so long"..

Look at that.. can you imagine trying to maneuver that dome inside an already cramped egg????

Yep, what she said ;)
They are the one exception make to assisting with a pip..if they pip internally I always do a safety hole for air and then keep a close eye on it. I only ever set maybe 6-8 silkies and 6-8 polish in each set so that I'm never overwhelmed with eggs to keep track of.

I totally agree.
This was my little one that had it's head stuck:

I have a cheeping egg! Could we have a baby by the end of the day? I knew that incubator was running hot, so hard to calculate with still air....
This egg is more important than it should be as it is our own first 'home laid' egg. And we lost the hen to egg binding a week later. It should be a buff Ameracauna.

I do have some good news...I locked down my batch of my own eggs tonight and (this is a first) every single egg I set made it to lockdown!! All 29 eggs looking good. Some air cells were bigger then others but I think that some are just starting to draw down. Also I set a torpedo-ish shaped egg, I'm not sure why because I know you're not supposed to set those but it slipped in and looks the furthest advanced. Probably be a first pipper...will be interesting to see it get out of that shell. Hatch is set for Friday but I definitely think I will have action sooner. And just be prepared to hear me wine about lockdown humidity in my 20.

Aww, thanks! That's why I pack that way because I've had a lot of busts with shipped and I know how disappointing it can be. It makes me very happy that yours are doing good. I will just try call eggs again and again if I have to, until I get a good hatch!
Me too!! Good luck!!

Aaawwwww!!!! I am currently bottle feeding a kitten. She was found in a box after crying to 2 days in my friends husband warehouse. So I brought her in and her eyes had just open a couple of days before. She is a feisty little one but she is also a chow hound!

it'd hard work had rearing a kitten.
Are you sure!!?? I thought a couple of my silkies were dead until they hatched. I left them in there in just in case.

. Keep me informed.
Good luck on your hatch! I can't wait for pictures.
