Hands on hatching and help

Chick pictures incoming!

First, a group shot of the ACs. The one in front had a lot to say about me dragging them away from their nice warm brooder.

Next, the NN chicks. The one in the middle was the total assisted hatch. The one on the right is my Independence Day baby.

These next ones are maybe cheating a little because I didn't hatch them myself, but I figured you guys would still appreciate them.

Oh they are so adorable!! Congrats :)

Adorable babies. Especially the nns.

That's great news.

I'm happy to report that my little silkie with the hurt leg has healed and appears to be 100%. I will get some vid when I have a chance. It just goes to show you that not everyone that opens their mouth and gives "advice" should be doing so as I was told that I should kill and eat her because her leg was hurt. Thank God that I use my own judgement in dealing with things.

I know exactly what you mean. Having to put down an animal is always a last resort. I've only ever done it once. My cat had cancer and was suffering badly. It was the humane thing to do but it was also the hardest thing. I haven't put down a chicken yet and I pray that I never will have to...

I had to cull my first chick a couple weeks ago. Not easy. Started hatching in 2014 and made it this long w/o any drastic problems, but this seems to be the year for it. I thought I was going to have to cull one of my big girls last week. Terrible case of egg bound/prolapse vent. I was able to remove the egg, but the lining of the vent was ripped from the egg and it was not staying back in. Thought for sure she was going to have to be culled. Kept saying one more day.... checked her, getting ready to give her another bath and try once more and took her out of the cage and her vent looked perfectly normal. I was amazed. I don't know how well she'll be able to lay, or if it'll cause a reoccurance, but so far so good.

Oh I'm sorry about the chick. That's just so difficult. I'm glad your big girl pulled through it though. You are one good mama hen. :) I hope when the time comes I'll be able to work miracles too lol. :)

Geez this person is so annoying. I don't know a ton of things but I do know you don't breed two frizzles together. I had some silkies that I purchased and they turned frizzled. I found a good home for them because I didn't want to have to monitor if their was mating. Now some chick is tell me it's fine for frizzles to breed together and she does it and her chicks are fine... does she not care about the animals she is bringing into this world at all? Ugh.

That's great news! I have not had a prolapse yet, and I think I should prepare just in case. Like you said, I think this year is going to be a rough one. I loved the extra mild winter we had but believe it or not I think it's going to throw a lot off this year. There was just an article in our Sunday paper about how bad bugs and mosquitos are going to be this summer and their various diseases they bring.

I've come across a few people that were or wanting to breed frizzles and had no idea about their genes. I really wanted to breed some polish frizzles, when I first started with chickens and after doing a small amount of research I found out and definitely decided against it right then and there.

I totally understand if it's an honest mistake but she chimed in after me and another person were discussing it. Even after telling her that is causes birth defects she then insisted that it doesn't and if it did hatcheries wouldn't sell them. It's one thing to mistakenly breed 2 it's another to knowingly do it after you've been told the consequences... :(

Well the day after tomorrow I'm my jubilee's and my easter eggers go on lockdown. I'm only running 2 incubators for the first time since I got them lol. After the all that's left are the cemanis and then they are empty. Just in time for school to start for the kids lol. It's looking like I got alot of roosters in my olive egger batch. :( always to many roosters.

Looks like a development issue... shipped eggs, correct?

It has happened with good, healthy, genetically diverse stock when the eggs were shipped... not much you could do... is it eating and drinking ok?
