Hands on hatching and help

You gotta do what you feel comfortable with!! Me and Amy are both hands on and both assist but we tease each other because she gets anxious and will check and monitor right away but I get anxious about interfering so I will wait it out until I know it's been more then enough time. There's no right or wrong as long as the chick is safe.

You were blessed with a lot more patience than I!! lol

Thanks. It's funny you say that cause I'm the same way lol. I want to wait but the anxiety gets to me. Having a little view hole helps me to stay calm though. Now I feel I can wait it out safely. Every time I lose a chick I feel personally responsible even when I'm not.. I just want every chick to make it lol..

That's about me. Once I can see that the beak is out and they are breathing and I can monitor, I'm less anxious at least for a few hours....lol

In all honesty, every assist I've done is not neccessarily a life or death help. I have done some that there is no question in my mind if I hadn't intervened, they wouldn't have made it, but there's as many that might have finished fine w/o my assistance, but I wasn't willing to risk it. But, I know when it's safe to proceed and when it's not. I give them 18-24 hours unless there's extreme circumstances. It's not for everyone, but it's what works for me and my chicks. If I wasn't able to assist successfully and have the chicks healthy-growing into healthy adult birds then I would change my practices, definitely. I can even understand why someone would be reluctant to help after having failed assists.

I can see the veins haven't receded yet so that makes it easier to wait. I know she isn't ready yet. She is doing really well just waiting around lol. I still see her beak moving so I'm hoping she may finish herself. I have 2 others that are externally pipped. I'll be happy once they have all hatched out. 2 still haven't pipped. I candled but didn't see movement so I'm not holding out hope. You never know though.

Excellent points. Knowing when and how much to help is the key. Just because we encourage folks to help, doesn't mean that its always rush rush rush right in and get the chick out! :thumbsup

Well 2 of my ayam cemanis have finally hatched. The assist is still hanging out in the incubator. The 2 that hatched were sticky. I'm thinking it's because I've struggled so much with low humidity during incubation and hatch. I think my last 2 have passed. I'll give the a little more time. When I candled one looked like their was a red blood spot inside. The other has no movement. Both are still. I think I know what it means... :(

Can You Post A Picture? Maybe if you posted a picture, we could help.

ETA: So Sorry If They Did Pass. I had 5 make it to hatch (only five developed, the rest were clear) and only 4 Hatched. It DIS and had barely started absorbing the yolk.

I would take a pic but my assist just hatched and their was a bit of a bleed. It's ok now but resting. I don't want to disturb it quite yet.. :(

Ok today is day 7 I was so excited and thrilled. Now my balloon has been popped.

Most of the molted javas are fertilized. But one has the air sack towards the bottom. What do I do,?

1 seabright looks like maybe it's fertilized the others not at all.

The biggest disappointment is the silver laced I bought off eBay. Not 1 looks like it was fertilized. They are clear as can be.

Tears.

I'm at 31% humidity. Based on air sacks what do I Need to do?

With the side air cell on the Java there really isn't anything you can do but monitor it closely at hatch time and hope that it can internally pip into the air cell.

Are the seabrights shipped? If they are just remember that a clear shipped egg does not always mean that it's infertile. Most of the time it is fertile but no longer viable due to shipping damage. That would definitely apply with the eBay eggs. I'm not saying all were fertile but hopefully anyone selling hatching eggs knows they have high fertility and it's caused from shipping.

The last pic with all the eggs and the 31% humidity, what day are those on?? If it's past day 14 I would say they look pretty good...maybe a tad big.

Does anyone here know when a silkie chick is fully feathered? I don't mean like the little tufts on their head I just mean when most their body is feathered? Thanks...

Fully feathered by 6 weeks. But mostly feathered by 4.
