You were blessed with a lot more patience than I!! lolYou gotta do what you feel comfortable with!! Me and Amy are both hands on and both assist but we tease each other because she gets anxious and will check and monitor right away but I get anxious about interfering so I will wait it out until I know it's been more then enough time. There's no right or wrong as long as the chick is safe.![]()
That's about me. Once I can see that the beak is out and they are breathing and I can monitor, I'm less anxious at least for a few hours....lolThanks. It's funny you say that cause I'm the same way lol. I want to wait but the anxiety gets to me. Having a little view hole helps me to stay calm though. Now I feel I can wait it out safely. Every time I lose a chick I feel personally responsible even when I'm not.. I just want every chick to make it lol..![]()
In all honesty, every assist I've done is not neccessarily a life or death help. I have done some that there is no question in my mind if I hadn't intervened, they wouldn't have made it, but there's as many that might have finished fine w/o my assistance, but I wasn't willing to risk it. But, I know when it's safe to proceed and when it's not. I give them 18-24 hours unless there's extreme circumstances. It's not for everyone, but it's what works for me and my chicks. If I wasn't able to assist successfully and have the chicks healthy-growing into healthy adult birds then I would change my practices, definitely. I can even understand why someone would be reluctant to help after having failed assists.
