Hands on hatching and help

I'm not sure if it was on this page or a different one but I read someone washes their chicks off if they r super gross as in covered in blood 1 and covered in scrambled yolk the other... I have tried to spot clean them w/ warm water and Q-tips but they still aren't fluffing and seem to be colder than the fluffers and being picked at any input exp would be appreciated this hatch has been a hot mess I thought there was a chain saw massacre from the one this morning ugh!!! And it's only about 1/2 over another whole day plus for the rest

But many times, just a good dry rubbing will be sufficient, and they will clean most of it off by themselves. Your judgement on how to handle.

Thank you the bloody one seems to be drying now. The scrambler from yesterday is still kind of matted but I'm trying not to mess w/ her too much. If the feather sexing is accurate (the already have pin feathers) they are all girls

He made it out he was a mess the yolk absorbed but was not intact so the rest covered him he was so sticky his eye was glued shut. The other 3 (from a different shipment) pipped and unzipped like rock stars they are all snuggling now hoping he's as tough out as he was in, surviving when the other 11 didn't start or quit before day 4 from being old/scrambled etc. little bugger needed a shot he only had the bottom half of the egg to develop in the rest was air cell his one little leg is weaker he's exhausted but I cleaned him up as best I could he's finally fluffing a little

I always refer to baby chicks as "he" but I see that it is a "she" . Anyway, I hate when I get those hard, sticky chicks! You can wash them with baby shampoo or dawn soap. But I like to go easy on them till I know they are eating, drinking and doing well after a rough hatch. Like WV said you can sponge bath her and then warm her up with the blow dryer. The only really important thing with sticky chicks is to make sure that the vent is not glued shut. They have to be able to eliminate wastes. I've had one that did have the vent stuck shut and luckily someone here on byc gave me the heads up. Also you can use a damp, warm q-tip to clear the eyes and nostrils from the goo. That little one will probably need lots of rest and to stay warm to gain strength. Great job getting her out!

I'm setting eggs today!!

I know I said I was done for the season...but I lost a lot of my grow outs in the last 6 months. I'm working on figuring out why and Ravyn has been helping me like crazy...thank god. Everyone has been wormed and treated for cocci just to safe. Anyway, I really need some quality black silkies to breed with my paints. Anyone from the SS/HS thread may remember the scrambled batches of eggs from the breeder in Florida that I really wanted? Well I sent her some packing pictures (again, thanks to Ravyn) and bit the bullet and bought a dozen (expensive) black silkie eggs. They arrived this morning and she did pack them extremely well. She sent me 18 eggs and only 3 have a slightly wobbly air cells. The other 15 look great! They look like local eggs!! So I am going to lay them down and just start hand turning them. After all the damaged batches of shipped eggs I have received I am very happy to get a batch that looks this good. let's just hope they are fertile & viable. The incubator is warming up now and I'm really excited for this hatch!! I plan on boring everyone to death with updates!!

Oh goodie!! I'll just be a few days behind you. The eggs I won from the MPC contest are on their way to me. Unfortunately, tracking says they won't arrive till Saturday, since Friday is a mail holiday. But I'm hoping they arrive tomorrow.

I also plan to set some of my own Serama's eggs with them!

I did have peachicks, until the neighbor's turkeys trampled them all to death Might get more in the spring. I can recommend a breeder in NY to get chicks from, but not eggs. Chicks are the better way to go usually because pea eggs are so fussy and hard to hatch even without being shipped.

Oh goodie!!  I'll just be a few days behind you.  The eggs I won from the MPC contest are on their way to me.  Unfortunately, tracking says they won't arrive till Saturday, since Friday is a mail holiday.  But I'm hoping they arrive tomorrow.     I also plan to set some of my own Serama's eggs with them!

If you have any trouble, I know someone who ships excellent quality Silkie eggs...I got eggs from her and I was extremely pleased with them and the resulting hatch. Her name is @RubyNala97 and she's awesome!!
