Hands on hatching and help

So I checked my little bantam Wyandotte due today DIS looks like it was malpositioned the only other viable egg due is a blue CM it was internally pipped but the membrane appears totally dried out...? I pulled off some shell opened its pip hole a little bit more covered w/ lube not a lot of blood vessels left to recede hopefully it will be out by bedtime. My others in there aren't due until Weds added a bunch of water hoping they aren't all dried out too ugh.

2 more are out, a few more pips, and I found a hatched shell under the broody and can hear it, but haven't seen it yet.

I'm thinking the 2nd hatcher is a bantam cochin though. She sent me 2 bonus cochin eggs, in addition to the Serama eggs, but only one developed. It has pipped, but not hatched yet. This one was clearly marked Serama, but I can see some leg feathering, so if it were to be a cochin, having 2 instead of 1 would be great..., if the other one does hatch. It was also the largest egg, so I'll have to ask MPC if it's possible that they mismarked it.

No, not all blacks will have the white wing tips and bottoms... plus some blues have that as well... that all depends on if they are Extended black based or Birchen based... no correlation between black and blue...

It's super hard to tell *for sure* which are blacks and which are dark blues at hatch... best to wait til they start feathering in...

Its very confusing telling the difference between the 2. I banded the 10 best chicks. My friend took the 2 light ones, so I will get to see what the feather out to be and then 4 of the black ones had beautiful crests but 6 toes. Some were not even a full tie but like a claw. I'll get a pic. And I'll get a pic of the 10 I'm keeping. The last one that I assisted out is a lot lighter then the rest. Looks more grey-ish and is definitely the runt of the liter.

Definitely keep the membrane lubed up. I like using bacitracin but use whatever you prefer just keep it up!

Yep, they are super hard to tell, mine I don't even guess at anymore, lol... but that's why I thought you got just blacks...

Oh, and like I said all 14 Paint eggs are developing well, 1 looks like a quitter already though... keeping for the rest, poor eggs took a beating from the PO of course...

Yes I use that it keeps auto correcting my early morning spelling lol little guy had his head out this morning I helped the rest of the way al the membrane was still pretty sticky and one of his feet seems a little weak his belly was closed but a little red so I put corn starch on in the rest aren't due until tomorrow now this one the lone survivor (an extra) from my batch of 10. I'm hoping I can just leave him until the others start hatching but I have the worst time leaving them in there even tho I know many ppl do and say it's fine etc. ugh he's very sleepy and wet now but once I get home from and he's dried off leaving him another potentially 2 days

Still not sure if I got 2 cochins or not, the little black one definitely isn't serama, but its leg feathering is not as heavy as the cochin, and the body isn't as plump. I'm still waiting to hear back from Alex from MPC on possibilities, but I'm guessing it is a cochin... just from a different pen. I'm hoping its mottled, which is kinda what it looks like.

I messed up with broody momma Sara. It was so cold out, I decided to put a light in the baby coop. She hatched 3 in the nest box, then when I got home on Friday, she had moved out under the light with the 3 just fine, but one chick was laying dead in the nest box, and 2 others had half-zipped, but not fully hatched. I raced all 3 inside, but they were all dead. I pulled the 2 out of the shells and they were perfect, I guess they just got too cold.

I think if I hadn't put the heat light in, she would have stayed in the box, and they would have been fine. Oh well, live and learn.

In the bator, 7 of 9 hatched. Last 2 late DIS. So 5 seramas, the calico/mille cochin, and the mystery chick. I brought the broody inside, and ended up giving all 5 seramas to her, so she is now raising the 8. I hope 8 isn't too many for her. I'll have to keep her inside for a bit longer than I hoped, because its so cold. But I think I will move her to hubby's office (room in the garage) instead of in the house. Adult birds are much stinkier and messy than chicks! lol

What a heartbreaker, WV....I see on BYC new threads crop up with the same problem - Mama hatched and should I put a light out there with her and the babies? I've always advised against it, but your experience will help more people than you know! Tough to share when we don't get a good outcome, but essential, I think.

My brain said it would just warm the area (it was just a plant grow bulb, not a big 250watt thing) and that she would stay on the nest. I was wrong. I sadly admit it. I'd much rather someone learn from my mistake than someone else find the same sad sight that I came home to.

The one on the right was fully hatched, but dead. You can tell it was barely hatched, still not fluffy.

The 2 on the left were sticking thru their zips like they tried so hard to get out. I nearly cried. They were still semi-warm, so I held them until I was sure they were gone.

If I had come home a bit earlier, I may have saved them....

hi my name is allison and im a new member here and a first time hatch mother its day 21 and i dont hear any peeping , see pips , or movement im worried about my little ones and i need some help should i work i have them in a homemade incubator and have no way to measure the temp or the humidity but have been seeing development in the eggs pleas help !

When you can, you definitely need to get thermometers and hygrometers in there... if there's no external pips, go ahead and candle them and see if they're internally pipped or at least have drawdown... that's where the air cell slants at an agle right before pip...
