Same, I open the incubator constantly. It never causes shrink wrapping. You've come to the thread where we all open the incubator during hatch and mess around in there

LOL, any time I start to reply about opening and not opening the incubator-----I make sure I am not on the "hands On" thread----cause Opening it and Messing in it is what you people do here----On the Hands On Thread!!!

So out of the 10 eggs I set for the staggered hatch, only 6 are looking fertile. Grrr. That only gives me 60% fertility this set and 73% for the first. That little black toe pecker needs to learn how to service, I don't think he's doing his share. I think Blooie is the only one getting the job done!

Oh, and one of the eggs that is developing, the air cell is on the side of the egg. It's firm, but it's on the side near the top. Tried to get a pic, but I don't think it shows up very well. I've never had that happen. Going to be interesting to see how that one plays out.

Still have 2 broodies and got zero eggs today. Frustrating little things.

Even after the messy hatch I ended up w/ 15/20 the last one hadn't absorbed the full yolk and it's a black blob on its belly now I had put Neosporin on it a cpl times hopefully it makes it. It's in the brooder w/ the others now. A cpl funky feet issues but not too major. Meddling isn't always a good thing but I'm glad I did this time or due to my incubating errors I wouldn't have nearly as many survivors!!!

Fertility will pick up when temps get warmer outside.
All 11 of my LO eggs on day 7 are looking good. But 4 of 6 of my SDWs were clear. 6 of 6 cochins started, but I pulled a bloodring. That's a first for that group.

So in place of the ones I pulled, I put in 4 Ohikis, 2 more SDWs from today, and 3 self blues.

Oh, and I loaded the other Brinsea with 23 CALL DUCK EGGS!!! e

Sounds exactly like mine this time. I'd have 4 less cochins and one less Serama if I hadn't meddled. But I felt humidity was my fault. All A-ok, except one splay leg cochin. Oh, the final one I helped had quite a big yolk to absorb, but he stayed in the shell until it was done. ICU for a day, and now I can only tell which one he is because he's a little smaller.

I have a question regarding the temp 'spikes'. Why do the heaters in the incubators get that hot? Shouldn't they be designed to max out at say 103degs. ?

Without thermostats they would get a lot hotter . The thermostat controls the length of time the element heats .The element can and will get very hot .It is possible for it to reach temperatures exceeding 200 degrees . Smaller elements of the exact same type are used in coffee makers and you know how hot they get . In a still air incubator the temperature around the element can be as high as 106 to achieve 101 at egg top level . Also after the thermostat cuts the power to the element it will continue to heat for as much as four minutes . Now that makes you think that most temperature spikes are caused by the thermostats . Throw in the ambient temperature factor and you have the basic cause of temperature spikes . Adding in of course operator error. So if the thermostat is set for 99.5 in a room where the ambient temperature is normally 68 to 70 degrees and that stays constant then all should be well . If however the ambient temperature rises 5 degrees the thermostat can't adjust for the change . So you find yourself fiddling with the thermostat constantly.

Lmao! That is true! Very true! I swear though he doesn't know how to mate. I've seen Blooie service the girls many times, but the only couple times I've seen Shadow even try he was on the wrong end! 2 Roos and 7 girls, you'd think they'd have it covered. Elvis my spitz has 26, I believe and I rarely crack an egg that doesn't look fertile!
That is a whole lotta incubating girlfriend! Lol
