Hands on hatching and help

Glad you learned, but sucks on how... :/ I have about a doz due about the 23rd, since I am trying to hatch every pure Snowy egg I get, lol... and the girls have 13 under them... not planning to hatch anymore from my mixed flock for a while... in fact, I was thinking of posting an auction tonight for 12+... :D
My girls must be feeling spring even though the weather doesn't feel like it because I've gotten a ton of eggs in the last few days myself. I was thinking of doing the auction too but I'm on the fence because I can't guarantee what colors they'll be. Still have two of your call eggs going strong on day 17. The air cells are crazy shapes, so I have no idea on their size. If I post some pics would you take a look and tell me if you think humidity has been on point?
Day 20. No pips, no moving eggs, no nuffin'! But hope springs eternal. They may have not been warm enough at some point in the incubation and will be late hatching. Plus they had a really rough start. And 21 days isn't carved in stone anywhere either, so all 8 will stay right where they are until they are either hatched or......or.....well, I dunno the "or" yet...
I hatch bantam eggs and lots of people say they hatch early but if my temps are consistent around 99.5 then they take the full 21 days. So :fl
:frow So glad to have found this thread. Some of you already know me and have helped me assist. I thank you all! I have a LG9300 and a Genesis Hovabator. The Genesis is new and I've only used it once and it was with my first batch of shipped Muscovy eggs that did not go so well. It was a dry incubation and then when it got down to hatching, I couldn't keep the humidity up. There were multiple DIS. I gave internal pips close to 48 hours at the start and found that too late. The only two that didn't die were two I jumped in to help at 24 hrs post internal pip. I put the bators away after that catastrophe. I got the 9300 out last week and have 7 eggs on day 6 now:D and I'm so glad to subscribe to this thread. I'm going to try to catch up on all of the posts now:fl lol. Just wanted to write a quick hello:frow
Good luck on the new set!
So, this morning marked the end of day 25 on my ancona ducks that have the bacterial infections; the runners reach the end of day 25 tomorrow night and look the same as the anconas. I removed a couple more from the Lyon bator and found dead ducklings inside. I'm now down to 9 anconas and 13 runners. And the vast majority of those have already stopped movement but there are still veins inside that are red; not all the veins inside are thick and black so I don't know if they are alive, dead, or on their way out. There are a handful of eggs that still show movement but the eggs have large clear spots at the bottom of the egg. Instead of being filled out and dark from the fully formed chick awaiting it's hatch, they look like they are a week behind. I still havn't put them into the hatcher cos they look nowhere near as full as they should be. Maybe 2 of them look full and have movement. Any recommendations??? Here is one of the eggs I pulled out and cracked open. Mushy, dead chick was found inside. All the eggs in that bator right now have these same black spots but the veins have just not completely disappeared like in this one. I don't know why I can't get a candling picture to turn out but at least you can kind of see the black stuff inside this one. This is at day 25.5. The clear spot is definitely too big for this late in the incubation am I right??? The rest that I am not 100% sure on look just like the clear spot on this pic but they still have red veins or movement. Should I leave them in the bator longer or move them to the hatcher with that big of clear spot at the bottom? I think it's a complete loss but I don't wanna give up in case some are still capable of surviving.
Ravyn took the words right out of my mouth or keypad, I guess. ;) if a hatch is really important to me I lay the eggs down and hand turn. I find it really helps the veining system (cam) to develop properly. I'm glad you stuck them in the hatcher, just make sure they don't start to smell with those spots!

Thanks. I'm still trying to catch up, lol. Good to see you are here

Whoops, thought I mentioned that, lol. Yes, these are Muscovy from an adult Black Pied male I was given and two Black Pied females I bought for him. One of the girls disappeared so I grabbed some of the eggs just to try again and hoping to hatch something from her.

Cool. Not that I know on duck from another.....lol

Sorry to hear that you are having a problem.

I was going to say I'd go ahead to the hatcher too. Good luck with them. They may surprise you. I've had plenty that I doubted that made it!

Just keep a nose to that bator with those dark ones. Are they by chance going to be black lings? I could tell which of my chicks were going to be black because they were sooo much darker thru the shell.
xs 2. I've had a couple I was certain were dooomed to have them hatch out healthy chicks.

I still have 14 of your eggs going strong. I have concluded that yours are going to start hatching Monday with mine following up finshing on Wednesday. Cayden and I always make bets on when they are going to start hatching and how many. He says 7 of yours will hatch and only 5 of ours will...lol I'm saying 10 of yours and 11 of ours. We'll see who's closer...lol I like my bator holding around 100, however the last 2 days I am having a problem between my two sides. One side is staying right at my 100ish and the other wants to stay at 101. I have rotated, I have tried balancing them out better and that side just does not want to come down, so I am trying to keep the ones that look more progressed on the cooler side. The humidity this time is just a headache...lol But, over the average, I'm comfortable with air cell size. A couple of the silkies I wish were a tad smaller and I wouldn't mind the greens being a tad bigger, but I don't think the are far off so I'm not overly concerned, yet.

I have two more hatches lined up after this one. One right after this one for my sister. She wants some more nns and I have two that lay jumbo green eggs. Her green eggers are down to one, I guess they are aging according to her man, so I am going to incubate a week's worth of my green eggs and she's going to take the chicks and see if she gets any green layers out of them. I get 2 almost daily so that will be probably around a dozen and if my Spitz starts laying again I'm throwing any of them in there for her as well. I plan on setting them the 27th. Then I'm supposed to go to Syracuse the weekend of May 21st and when I come back I will be collecting a small amount of greens to set myself. So, it looks like we will be staying busy with hatching for the next couple months. YAY!

sorry I guess I did this wrong. I was replying to another poster, I thought! about what the correct level is in the bator to get the correct temp. on top of turner?

Sorry I'm still confused what the "level" is you are looking for. Temps should be 101-102 for the still air that needs to be taken at the top of the eggs. (Forced is 99.5)

Well, I went ahead and stuck them into the hatcher.  I have one that I left in the incubator though cos the air sac was pretty small which is prob a good indication it quit.  Anyways, I did find movement today in 7 of them.  Turns out there 4 that I feel a lil more confident in because they filled out more (I'm givin them a 50/50 chance) but the other 5 I highly doubt will have a chance since the air sacs are so big and there is so much black inside of them.  Hope we get some to hatch....

You did exactly what I would have suggested... I've had many a duck egg I swore was a quitter surprise me, so I never pull any at the end unless they smell...

X2! :highfive:

They are anconas so they should be a mix of white and one of the following colors:  Blue, Black, Chocolate, lavender, lilac, silver and tri-color.  Most should have more white on them than the other color but I did see quite a few from the breeding stock that had a lot more of the darker colors on them.  Guess we will find out.  Hopefully I can find some pips soon.  No internal pips yet either.

These are shipped?? I am curious, who is the breeder? Feel free to PM me that if you'd rather... I am asking cuz I have a friend who breeds those and in the same colors... ;)

Yep, post pics!! I wanna see... and you might want to do a couple mists on them if you haven't...

Another thing... with anyone setting shipped eggs... monitoring air cell growth becomes very, very difficult due to air cell damage... saddled air cells *can look* huge when really they are on track or too small... it can be very difficult to determine the ones that actually are too large... just a note... :)

Sorry for taking so long! I finally got my pics of a few of the shipped bantam eggs. These are day 7 and I'm seeing:
1. Blood ring (appeared yesterday)
2. ???? I suspect it's a dud
3. Clear

The others in the bator are mostly clears but a couple look like pic 2. I really don't like these porous eggs

I appreciate any opinions on these!

I'm so excited to see your silkie chicks! My bet is whatever number makes it to lockdown will all hatch minus 1. They didn't get a lot of damage and with you hand turning I think you'll have similar results to me. Its so easy to control humidity in the mini that it's a piece of cake but when I use the 20 it's a headache too. With both wells full it sits at 35% and I have to get creative to keep it consistently higher. I'm happy to hear you'll be hatching more too!! I have a dozen call duck eggs in transit as we speak from Indiana. :fl for intact air cells. Plus, we have the same hatch date coming up, which is so exciting!...we'll both be up all night! Lol.

Here they are....what do you think? If it's to hard to tell in the pics, I can trace them and then show you the marks.

Yes, 1 looks like a blood ring and 2 & 3 look clear.

Eta: I hit submit to soon.

I've been reading Storey's guide to ducks and it has some very good info on hatching ducks. If I was breeding I would definitely consider monitoring co2 levels. But I checked and a good tester is about $100! Anyway, since a lot of people on here are hatching ducks I thought this pic might be helpful!
