Yes, paints are very Interesting, I never know what to exspect, I had a couple of white ones pop out BUT as they got older and the big boy feathers came in and sure enough so did the SPOTS. LOL they were hidden under the baby fluff..
Wouldn't that be a hoot? The little one we lost would likely (and as I'm getting to know Silkies I stress "likely") have been another red paint, but her markings were very light and difficult to see.
It does stink when the little kids find the chicks we lose, but as Katie says, "You do what you can and leave the rest up to God, Gramma."
first time I tried it had 2, only diff this time was higher humidity and got 0. But did notice the last hatch and this one had a few that were a little behind the others so gotta figure out what that is about.
Eggs were gathered same day and stored at room temp until all were put in the incubator 2 days later
Well I think I'm done on my Isabelle eggs. One had a good sized pip but was DIS when I got home today. Another that pipped a while ago but made no progress still hadn't hatched, so I went for the assist. It was malpositioned, feet over head. Because of the position its belly hasn't closed up all the way either so I gently repositioned it and put it back in the shell in a cup to give it time to close up. I'll check it in a little bit.
So total count is two Isabelle out, one Isabelle that was malpositioned and is resting in the incubator, and four brown split to Isabelle.
But at my chickenstock today I won six lavender silkie eggs, 12 AC eggs (actually from birds that came from my eggs last year, lol) and I bought four turkey eggs. So those will be set tomorrow.
I HAD A BIG BABY. OMG, it's a GOOSE, YES, I had to help and it was a scary ride. He was half out of his shell and half in, I could see he still needed to shrink down his navel. HOURS AND HOURS went by, the naval wasn't shrinking, I looked inside the shell,
Now keep in mind, he's moving his feet, kicking at the shell etc. etc.
Well when I looked inside, I COULD see what the problem was. SO I assisted. he had a BLOB of Gooy stuff wrapped around the tip of his navel area and around his main viens. when he tried to escape from his shell, the blob of gooy stuff, was pulling on his navel area keeping him from shrinking up. It was like a tug of war going on in the shell. So I got a wet qtip and started to rub the gooy stuff off his navel area but WHAT HAPPENS NEXT, I was NOT planning. YES, the main vein BROKE.
AHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOO,. I quickly grabbed a paper towel and IMMEDIATELY applied pressure. In my past, I have lost about TWO babies, a chick and a duck because of blood loss. the Chick was ANTSY and Stormed out of his shell to early, The duck was my fault because I wasn't aware at that time, you DON"T pull them out. ( that was 7 or 6 years ago)
SO we got the blood to stop and the little guy is resting now. I plan on staying up all NIGHT to make sure he pulls through. this is my FIRST GOOSE, he's sooo cute. IT'S amazing and maybe it's just me because I'm used to 1 to 2 pound ducks and chickens but this guy is HUGE.. ahahahhaha. When I put him in my hand, he not only covers my hand but also my wrist.. I can hardly get a call duck to cover my fingers let a lone my entire hand.![]()
I'm waiting for him to fluff up, then I will take him for a ride down the road to show the guy and ask him to see if any of his girls that went broody have a friend for him. Crossing fingers he does..Congrats! Geese are the sweetest babies and they're totally addicting, just warning youI hope you're able to get him a friend from the person who gave you the egg like we were talking about in the other thread.![]()
