Hands on hatching and help

At 53.00 a bag for diatomaciuse earth 8.00 for cinnamon . It adds up on a daily bases weekly bases. What other solution do I have that is safe.

I did something I never thought I would do today....made a duck a diaper! Lol. I was going to buy one (and probably still will) but in the meantime Ravyn gave me the idea to make one myself out of a sock. I found a YouTube video and it was pretty easy. Also found out today that our little boy duck is most likely a girl (again thanks to Ravyn). I just love that duck so much. Now that she has a diaper she got to hang out on the couch and watch a movie. I couldn't get a good pic of the diaper and its black, like her, so hard to tell.
But I did take a recent pic...

Yes, I've had a couple that got spots later. I sold a white chick today but I had to tell the woman that she may gets spots as she gets older. I have 6 that a hen just hatched and her whole batch came out so nice, it was hard parting with 2.
Aww, that's so beautiful! Kids are often much smarter then us when it comes to the simply things. As adults we over-think, over-analyze, over-stress and they just say it like it is!
You're talking about malpositions, right? I always get at least 1 in every batch. Even when I use different incubators, different methods, shipped eggs, local eggs, I can't escape them.
Good job on the hatch. And sounds like some great eggs! I'm setting another batch tomorrow too!

She is such a doll! Can't believe how full she is looking already! Notice I didn't say"big" lol

I'm considering duck diapers as one of my side businesses when I quit working, along with chicken saddles and such. :)

I HAD A BIG BABY.  OMG, it's a GOOSE, YES, I had to help and it was a scary ride.  He was half out of his shell and half in, I could see he still needed to shrink down his navel.  HOURS AND HOURS went by, the naval wasn't shrinking, I looked inside the shell,

Now keep in mind, he's moving his feet, kicking at the shell etc. etc.

Well when I looked inside, I COULD see what the problem was.  SO I assisted.  he had a BLOB of Gooy stuff wrapped around the tip of his navel area and around his main viens. when he tried to escape from his shell, the blob of gooy stuff, was pulling on his navel area keeping him from shrinking up.  It was like a tug of war going on in the shell. So I got a wet qtip and started to rub the gooy stuff off his navel area but WHAT HAPPENS NEXT, I was NOT planning.  YES, the main vein BROKE.

AHHHHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOO,.  I quickly grabbed a paper towel and IMMEDIATELY applied pressure.  In my past, I have lost about TWO babies, a chick and a duck because of blood loss.  the Chick was ANTSY and Stormed out of his shell to early, The duck was my fault because I wasn't aware at that time, you DON"T pull them out.  ( that was 7 or 6 years ago)

SO we got the blood to stop and the little guy is resting now.  I plan on staying up all NIGHT to make sure he pulls through.  this is my FIRST GOOSE, he's sooo cute.  IT'S amazing and maybe it's just me because I'm used to 1 to 2 pound ducks and chickens but this guy is HUGE..  ahahahhaha.  When I put him in my hand, he not only covers my hand but also my wrist.. I can hardly get a call duck to cover my fingers let a lone my entire hand. :lau

That's awesome! :)

Never been interested in geese until I saw the sebbies. Now there's a goose I wouldn't mind having.

Me too!!

I actually met someone here on BYC that moved out of NYC to my area and wanted to start chickens. I sold her eggs and we became friends and now she owns these beauties...

Hope you don't mind me bragging about your babies,
@sugarstark

Question -,I have tried in the baby duck coop to put down diatomaciuse earth in baby coop and cinnamon down. It gets so wet and muddy in there. Dirt floors . It will not stay to keep ants out of that coop. Older ducks have part side walk and part dirt floors it's a little better. How much of it do we need to continue to use. On a daily bases .to support all my coops. 5 lb just yoused it covered all but one coop. If you or cleaning regular your wasting it.less then 24 hrs later. I have to keep it wet and spray when it's hot. Not so much when it's cold. To dump there pool it gets really wet. And off course there endless water play.

I don't use DE and I don't have full grown ducks but have you tried using wood chips and straw? I take all the bedding from my chicken coop and dump it into my run. Each week there's always more to dump in and I rake most of it out every 6 months and start over. The wetter it gets the more you can add. It's always going to be a mess because they are ducks but just keep dumping bedding in there. Just a thought.

I almost went with sebastopols as the breed I have here. I hatched some gorgeous babies. Unfortunately they had MG. Still not entirely clear if they hatched with it or somehow caught it (they had never been outside and lived entirely in my workshop) but they had to be culled. Worse yet, it spread to all my chicks from that year and I had to cull them all. Very pretty geese though and I'm sad it didn't work out.

But now I've settled on roman tufted geese. They're critically endangered and need the help more anyway, plus they are just adorable with their little tufts and are super sweet and docile. My babies from this year:

They are super sweet. Lacie, my adult female, wins over everyone she ever meets. She's been to Petco, convinced several of my friends to try Roman Tufteds, and she is the friendliest bird I own. Here she is:

Goslings are also the cutest babies. They talk back to you when you talk to them :love I already have several orders for goslings next spring. If you're in my neck of the woods next spring swing by and I'll give you a couple eggs ;)

Brag away my friend, I feel the same way.
@pyxis
I would LOVE a pair of your goslings, let's talk next spring ;)

I'll include a pic (hopefully) that's more recent as my Sebastopol babies have feathered out stupendously!

I also hatched some Icelandic and true bantam amaraucana if anyone is interested...

I'll be trying again for some black east indie babies... My 1 of 2 that locked down and I assisted did not make it... I'm not a rookie duck hatcher but this little one gave me a run for my money! Ended up nearly losing all hope, then helped only to witness an exploding bacteria festered umbilical rupture... It was tragic and to have the little thing running around and preening my son just an hour earlier... Thank god it went fast

I'm still looking for peacock eggs and whatever else that's PURE and uncommon.

By the way, anyone local to 10524 NY... I can get Icelandic, bantam amaraucana, bantam buff brahma and possibly silver quilled old English eggs and hatch them for you. Chicks are $10 and under.

Thanks for the mention rubynala97

Enjoy the long weekend!

Kate
