Hands on hatching and help

It's like Christmas for me lol I went to sleep with one chick drying off in the incubator and woke up with two of them waddling around in there

My 8 year old son took a dive off his scooter after dinner tonight. Cut up his knee pretty bad. As I'm bending over cleaning his bloody knee, he tells me "I think my arm is broken"...what?! He was right. It's broken. Sitting in the hospital....motherhood is not so glorious.

And I quoted a lot of posts that were already answered so this may seem redundant but I'm on my phone and dead tired so keeping them...
They will not be interested in it right away. Give them some time to strengthen. Did you take any special precautions with the shipped eggs? What was your regimen with them from the time they arrived on?
I run q little higher temp. Usually around 100. Did you monitor the air cells? How did they look? Also did you calibrate a separate hygrometer and thermometer?
:th
Wow!!!!! That's a LOT of chicks!! You rock!
Amy, when I counted how many hours it had been I thought About you!! I knew the chick was not ready from when it pipped. It was not drawn down, FULL of veins and fluid/space. I was shocked it pipped. Besides peeking in the pip the next morning I didn't touch it once! Just shined my candler in and made sure it was alive.

And x2.
It really boils down to quality. With my chicks I have a certain price range and I list for a specific price but once they hatch that price can go up or down a couple dollars depending on how close to SOP they are.
I want one so bad!
I love the portal idea! I thought it was amazing from the second I saw the first pics! If you have mostly LF just make sure the silkies don't get bullied or picked on. Because of their vaulted skulls they are prone to brain injuries from pecking. I know you'll do great, though!!
Did the zipper get out?

:hugs Hope your son is feeling better soon! The joys of having boys! One of my sons is prone to needing stitches and getting teeth chipped the other has had broken fingers-twice lol.

One of my teeny tiny baby Serama chicks. It weighs 16g, two thirds of an ounce!! Its regular size sibling weighs 50g - two ounces - for comparison, so all three Seramas together are still lighter than the regular chick.

Oh how cute!!! :love

With 4 kids we have had our fair share of accidents. They almost always happen after hours or on the weekends lol. Hope your little guy feels better soon. Sounds like he took it like a champ though.. :)

Lol we've got 4 too- never a dull moment

Thankfully, today is a little less hectic. I can finally get on here to catch up! I've had to have the horse vet here twice this week- our mini pony who is close to 40 years old has pneumonia and isn't eating. She didn't respond to the first antibiotics so we have her on 2 others now. So I'm making pills into paste and syringe feeding them to an unhappy little patient 3x a day. Hopefully she pulls through. She's a sweet gal.

In the incubator, we're on day 9 today and things are going pretty well. My shipped Splash Marans are looking great 14 of 16 definitely developing as of day 7, one maybe, the other doubtful.
I'm doing a test hatch of my Calico/ Mille Fleur bantam Cochins. These are brand new layers and 18 week old cockerel and I have 1/4 of those developing. I looks like a quitter, the other 2 are nada. I need to open those and see if they started at all. And I think I have 3 or 4 of my BBS copper Marans in there too lol.

Since I was very lucky to have won some Ayam Cemani eggs from cjwaldon's bonus round Price Is Right game last night on the auction chat thread, looks like I will be setting more eggs next week!! :weee

Aww sorry about your pony. From my experience they are quite the little fighters though. I'll say a prayer she pulls through. How exciting you won some eggs. I never win anything lol.. :)

Thanks!!! I took the kids to their ball games and to get ice cream since they won and came home just in time to watch the first chick hatch! That was so amazing! I may become addicted to incubating lol
Adorable! Congrats!

Hi all, im new to the obsession. I had 1/24 shipped eggs make it to lockdown with visible movement all the way when candling. A little silkie. She pipped and 24 hours later started a strong zip. Then stalled out and i didnt get in soon enough to rescue. Peeled her sad little body out and she was beautiful. Such a sad loss. After talking with amylynn i think this was a humidity issue.

Now i have one americauna egg left in the bator. Its blue and ive seen an intact air cell, veins, and a dark shape, BUT never any movement. Its now day 22. I candled and float tested. No movement, tho it did float. (Dont scold - i know was too soon but im mad with grief over the lost silkie).

My question for the experienced: Whats the hope? It seems pretty slim to me. Any realistic chance its just late and i cant see movemevt thru the blue shell? I see articles about late hatching day 23 etc. But is that just a one in a million fantasy?

Part of me just wants a fresh start but i hate to give up if theres a valid hope....
I'd give it till the end of day 23 and then if there's no internal pip I'd go in through the air cell just to verify no movement and then do the eggtopsy.

Like a "No chick left behind" thing! I LIKE IT

Jennifer, i could kind of kick myself b/c i looked at brinsea but just didnt want to spend the money. But now im on failed hatch number two. First set lost to a POS janoel gifted by a well meaning relative. Thing only heated to 94 degrees the whole time but i didnt figure that out till day 24.

So then, Rod-t, i upgraded to a hovabator 1588 with auto turner. Forced air and set temp. Ive been comparing the bator readings with a separate hygrometer and two thermometers.

So long story short, i just seem bad at this. Got so close with this silkie tho. Arggghhhhh
You'll get it. The 1588 is a good bator, and once you tweak the humidity and all, you should have better results. Shipped eggs will always be a risk though.

I could never from day one of my first hatch, leave anything alone

A friend lent me a little giant styrofoam ,oldy ...but goody I guess .my first was not many 7/18 and wouldn't you know it ,I have one hen ,Hannah ,the rest were all cockerels.3 in the freezer,3 rehomed

2nd hatch 5/15 so again...not great but then came 8 duck eggs...LOST EM ALL. STICKIN TO CHICKENS

This last round I'm playing with my curiosity and I've set many "rounded " eggs and 5 pointy ...they are a pippin today, due tomorrow
I have never ever ever ever...used a hydrometer

maybe I should and I can perfect my hatch rate ...my luck, I'd lose em all

I have 25 buns in the oven ,and the timer is about to pip

I love this thread!!!
I highly suggest a hygrometer for guidance, but I put more stock in watching the air cells to really know how to adjust the hudmidity.
