Are they little chickies or standard size(which either way my curiosty aside) they look great to me.

So busy this week. Tried about 4 times to catch up yesterday!

I absolutely positively hate them....lol I would never buy another, and no they don't help with poop. Actually they roost on the top and poop more I think...lol  Filling them is a pain because the top is so much higher than the bottom. Hard to explain. If you just fill the bottom portion the food is low in the feeder. If you fill it enough that it comes up to the holes it makes a mess before you can close it.  This one sits outside all the time, I don't normally use it, but I needed something for out there. I hate the big round one that I have in the coop, but it's better and they don't poop in it.

I totally knew what you meant when I was reading this. I only have 1 and I agree. I try to use a little cup and make like a peak of food down the middle before I slide the lid on!

My favorite feeder is one I hang from the ceiling of the run. It's always empty and the other feeders never are, so I think it's the chickens favorite too. And they never spill it.

So I have another experiement I am trying with helping sticky chicks.  SO far all is good, I have a call duck that is three days late and I can tell he's got a lot of gooy stuff in that shell, So I'm atempting to save him, I know the chances are 90/10 out of a 100 and that meaning 90% of not making it and 10% making it.  So far my little experement is working out OK. I have managed to remove MOST of the sticky gooy stuff out without harming the embroy.  He's still alive and it's be almost 24 hours.  I'm patiently waiting for him to absorb some yolk and internally pipped.  It's a slow process but if this works out I WILL BE OVER JOYED.  

I will keep you updated on my results.  With him being this sticky I usually lose them but so far, CROSSING FINGERS IN A BIG WAY, he's still alive..

LOL, You just not set-up to fill those easy fill long "red ones" LOL---YET. Get you a plastic container with a lid----pour the 50lb bag of feed in it, But make sure the plastic container is a little longer than the "long red one"or the metal ones. Place the red one down inside the container----pour it full of feed without opening it---shake it a little so excess feed falls out and give it back to them. The only time I open those it to wash them. They Fill Soooooo Easy----like this---gotta do something when you go about 20 to fill twice a day !!! LOL

I Need Help. I accidentally cracked an Egg in the incubator, they only have a few days left before hatch. What should I do. I candled to see if it was still alive, there is still heavy Veining, and there was movement, No Leaks so it did not pop the membrane but what do I do to keep bacteria and Microorganisms out of the egg?!? I'm gonna put some petroleum jelly over the crack for now.

It's already been said but I've done this twice in the third week of incubation. I cut a piece of clear packing tape to cover the cracks and both times the chick hatched fine. One time was actually day 10, I think.

I do answer and offer a lot of info on the broody hen thread. I know we are on the wrong thread but I will give you a quick reply. I do not use a silkie for a hatching hen a lot, maybe a dozen in the last year. I usually let the other hens or the incubator hatch their eggs. The ones I do use are for sure Moved to the private hatching pens and I never have a problem with them. The broody silkie stays with them till they do not need her anymore----then I usually sale the chicks or most of them. I never----with No chicks allow them with the Flock---older chickens(Just My Way--I do not like the pecking and killing that happens with a lot of them). I feel if you will move the broody silkies to a private pen---like I do---you will see a lot better results. Make sure if you do that you use 1/2" hardware cloth of the pens----to keep the chicks in and the snakes/rats out. Good Luck! 

Thank you. So I guess I have to move them. The other chickens are actually really nice to the babies. They will even warm them up when they are cold. It's just I can't get the mom to bond with them or something. I have an indoor quarantine area in my basement and I can move them there. I will try that again next time and see if it helps. When do you reintroduce all of them to the flock.

Did anybody set for the fourth of July? I didn't set yesterday which is the technical set date but I set 8 NN eggs today and will set a bunch of cemani eggs tomorrow. They tend to hatch two days early so probably will hatch on the 4th. Wouldn't be surprised if the NNs hatch early either.

I also had to steal back the keet that I had given my broody hen. It just wasn't thriving with her - the size difference between it and two I had kept inside was very noticeable so it's probably a good thing that I decided to take it. She still has the AC cross chick I gave her so she's happy.

That's what I've noticed too. That the chicks with mom are so tiny compared to brooded chicks inside. A week to two weeks smaller!

Haha same here. My youngest is just 6 months now and im breastfeeding. Can't decide which is more demanding, my kids or my chicks/eggs lmao..

Still nursing here too! But mine is 1 & 1/2. Actually I think I went hatching crazy when he was about 6 months...lol.

So i took the petroleum off and replaced it with Wax, What Do You Think?!? LMAO.

That was the easiest assist I've ever done. Talk about ready! Not even a trace of veins. The shell just crumbled and he wiggled right out. Never seen a membrane 100% clear before.
