Hands on hatching and help

Congratulations!!! :celebrate
So true! I want to get NPIP. It's $100 a year here though. But I'm working on it.
X2....except mine are younger.
Check Craigslist.

Yes I would really like to get npip as well but I saw on the northern California thread that only 50 people can get it and that there is a waiting list in cali for hobby farms... :( seems unfair.
My kids aren't even allowed to use Facebook or the Internet at all unsupervised. Mine are younger but honestly I don't see that changing lol.. :)

I would check on that, that doesn't sound right. They want people to be NPIP certified, they wouldn't put a limit on it. I can believe there's a waiting list for the testers to be able to come out and test, but I can't believe that they would say only 50 farms in CA can have it.

Personally I chose not to do it. It's free for me and I could have it done any time, but there's no point to it. When I checked into it, in my state they only test for one disease, salmonella. They don't test for anything useful like MG or even AI, if you can believe that. They also don't even test waterfowl, which are the largest vectors of disease. Plus no one ever, ever checks up on if you're following the rules, meaning I could get NPIP certified, then go ahead and get birds in from someone who isn't which would technically ruin my certification, but no one one would know. Anyone who is NPIP can do this. The post office doesn't ever check if you're certified when you're mailing eggs or even chicks or adult birds.

So for me there's no point. All I would gain from it is going on a government list and letting them know I have chickens so that they can come around and destroy them on me when hysteria about the bird flu takes over (seriously - does anyone else remember the thread where a guy got quail eggs from a farm that then turned out to have AI, and they tested the eggs and they didn't have the flu, and then tested his birds and they didn't have the flu, and then decided they were going to destroy them all anyway?). And I'd also be limiting myself on where and who I could get birds from, meaning I'd be totally unable to get eggs or birds from a great breeder with super healthy birds because they don't have a piece of paper saying their birds don't have salmonella. No thank you.

Definitely no offense to those who get certified, it just doesn't make sense for me personally. I might in the future if the benefits ever outweigh the cons but for now they don't in my case.

the limit is for hobby farms because in our area the amount t of chickens you can have depends on how many acres you have. So if you have less then 40,000 square foot or 20 I can't remember then your considered a hobby farm. Over that and the rules are different. I could be wrong on all this though. It was just a small spot on the cali thread and I could be misinterpretin it too. I would like to get certified but my problem is we have way more birds then we are allowed. Everyone in our neighborhood does. I worry about having to get rid of my birds if someone comes out. My husband and I have been talking about moving somewhere with way more property even farther into the country but it's so much work and we would have to sell our house.. :(

Yeah, if you're over the limit of how many you can have I'd be hesitant to have the government come out, lol. You really probably won't ever have to worry about it. Not being NPIP certified has never impeded me, and the only reason I could see that people want to do it is to be able to ship eggs and birds, but the PO isn't really checking, or to sell to others who are NPIP, but as I said, someone NPIP could really just go ahead and get them anyway and no one would know (at least where I am).

So, you set any more eggs yet? I know the addiction has set in for you :p

Lmfao oh yeah. I have 4 incubators 4 lmao. In my brinsea I have my ancona duck eggs. A few jubilee orpingtons and a few welsummers. I have 6 gold laced polish bantams in my brinsea mini. I lost count but 12 + silkies in my other mini manual and like 16 lf cochin in my generic magic fly lol. I asked my husband if he would help me build one more since I have some ameracauna and jubilee on the way lmao. The addiction is real lmao.. :p

Lol, I have four incubators too, but two I prefer not to use. Luckily between my two brinseas I can do like 80 eggs if I get creative so usually I don't have to. I keep thinking mine are going to be empty and then I fill them again. Of course recently I bought 6 eggs and the seller sent 20 (talk about sending extras) so that really helped fill the incubator up again, lol.

Lol that's what happened to me. Everytime I order some they send me like 6 extras lol. On one hand I'm grateful but on the other I'm thinking I keep a bigger incubator lol

It must be spring...oh wait, it is. Everyone has so many incubators running! I had 3 going till yesterday. I have to say the hova bator did great! But I didn't want to hatch in it, unless I had too. Figured I would try to keep it nice and new while I can. The brinsea's are so easy to clean out after hatch. And duck hatches are way stinkier then chicken hatches. Yuk!

So Is It Considered Help Immediately If You're Doing Eggtopsy's and you find a live Chick breathing in the air cell, even though the air cell never drew down?

So you opened the air cell and the chick had its beak through the membrane and is breathing? Can you get a pic? You're going to need to keep the membranes moist and give it time to come out on its own. I use bacitracin and reapply about every 3 hours. I put a nice layer on before bed. That's the biggest issue you will have. Just leave it be and keep the inner membrane pliable.

Lol definitely spring is in the air. I'll be happy when I finished with my last hatch and plan on taking a break while I work on my coop expansion lol. I'm going to need it lmao. ;)
