Hands on hatching and help

Ok I'll have to go grab some without pain relief. I'll do that shortly. Her bellybutton is like sticking out a bit. What causes that? She is the last one to hatch. Could it have been the high humidity?

She might have been in a cool spot... she just wasn't really quite ready... happens once in a while, that's why I stress about being patient... when they internal pip they've usually still got yolk to absorb... she didn't quite finish...

And I am not saying you rushed her, btw... I had a Call duck hatch out totally on its own with a huge yolk sac still to absorb... she refused to sit still, lol...

I had a silkie hen over heat today! It was super hot, like 95 and humid. Never had that happen before. She was in a corner in the run, panting like crazy-nonstop and breathing so fast. She couldn't move. I brought her some ice water and she only would take a couple sips. I know ducks control their body temp through their feet, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to soak her feet in cold water. It did the trick in no time! Then the boys were trying to mate her right after she was back on her feet. I was so mad at those slime balls! I swatted them with a towel anytime they went near her. Can't a girl get a break when she doesn't feel good?!!

Poor girl... I've heard a lot of people set out shallow pans of ice water for the chickens to stand in to cool off... I toss mine frozen peas, ducks and chickens both love it, lol...

Glad you saved her! That was quick thinking.

What color silkies do you have? I hatched three lavender silkies about three weeks ago and I'm playing with the idea of getting some more lavenders and blacks to breed them with, and the pictures everyone posts here of ones that they've hatched from your eggs look so nice.

I know your not saying that. I hope I didn't. She was the first to pip and still hadn't hatched after all the others... she was shivering in the incubator so I have her under the brooder light. I hope thats ok. I was worried the temp wasn't warm enough for her. ..

That's fine... you want her warm and quicker she dries the better... want that navel to dry out... :)

Thanks! No lavender but I do have black!

Mine was the last to hatch too! And it had taken a long time. But I think it was positioned weird and that was inhibiting yolk absorption. Since she was the last in the bator Ravyn told me to take all the water out and I think that helped. I never thought of that but the dryer the better. So she should do good under the light.

Ok glad to hear that. I'm happy the hatch is finally over lol. All my babies are so cute. I ended up with black, silver and blue it looks like. I think I see a bit of buff to but I won't know until the yellow fluff goes away lol.

Yeah the humidity was like 85 percent from her hatching. I'm sure that wasn't helping if we need it dry lol.

Okay. Going into hour 22 of only having an internal pip. The baby is still chirping, but seeing as that it is getting close to the 24-hour mark, that her siblings died for no apparent reason right after lockdown, and that it's getting pretty late and I will have to sleep eventually (I have 4 young kids),.....I went ahead and gave her a tiny little safety hole. Oh boy was I nervous! I practiced with the screw on other eggs and made sure I wouldn't smash the egg in. I think my heart was in my throat. I barely punctured it with the tip of the screw at the top of the air sac, but it did go completely through. Will this tiny hole provide sufficient oxygen? .........................You can begin to make your grand entrance now little one...........................

Quick question on color. I thought yellow fluff turns into white but I see ducklings that have white fluff and yellow fluff. What's the difference?

I've seen yellow or white down and they colored out the same... not sure if it's similar to chicken colors in one might be silver based white and other might be gold based white...
