Oh, wow!! I completely understand why you are so nervous! But that is an immensely incredible thing you are doing! I wish you all the best in the success of your endeavor!!
No reason to be harsh when someone is already stressed out... you did not make a mistake, you were worried... if you had made a true mistake, that duckling would have bled out already...
I know the hatching 101 guide, and while it has a lot of good info, it is geared more towards ideal hatching situations and not 'special needs'... plus I don't think it has a warning about ducklings testing our patience, lol... I may have to seriously think about writing one for duck hatching, including shipped... hmmm...
I have hatched a lot of Call ducks, and many of those shipped... those are almost all assisted hatches... so if you need help and can't get a response here (like if everyone is asleep), please feel free to PM me... it won't bother me, I promise...
And if you get worried about the others that are pipped, you can open them like your first, just remember to be careful of that inner membrane and put ointment on it to keep it moist... you might need to reapply it, so check it regulary too...
You should also now be able to see the red veins in the inner membrane on the first, right? Watch those and when they recede you'll know it's close to being ready...![]()

So very, very happy for you!! You did absolutely great!! Sounds like you didn't need help, really, either!Though I do know it helps to have someone give support... just glad I was able to give you that reassurance...
Yes, ducklings are the most cute! They have to be to make up for all the mess you're going to have to deal with now, lol... they're totally worth it though...

Nothing cuter, for sure...
Pleas do post pics when you can... can't wait to see the little life changers you've brought into your world...![]()
So happy for you and I can't wait to see pics. I read somewhere about another project in south America I think where they used ducks for laying eggs instead of chickens to help end hunger. The chickens weren't hardy enough and needed to much feed where as the ducks were more hard and foraged something like 80 percent of their food. It was a big success. They also used the kaki cambells. Sorry about the spelling lol. Ducks really can be more beneficial then chickens in alt of instances.![]()
Yes the mess is incredible lol. Was hoping to have our anconas out in the introduction pen but we got hit my a major heat wave. Temps are close to 112 degrees.. I seriously hate summers where we live...![]()
Yep, ducks are much more disease resistant... forage much better... and are easier to house and care for than chickens... it's just the messiness that gets to most, lol...
I feel your pain on the heat wave... we're fully miserable here too... :/
