Hands on hatching and help

Well,  we ended up with 13 babies out of 16 eggs.  One was clear (it was dark green and I couldn't see into it AT ALL) one died on hatch day without ever internally pipping, and one hatched with an unabsorbed yolk sac and died the following day.  This is our best hatch ever and I am pretty thrilled with the results, although I wish we could have saved the one with the yolk issue.
They're a rainbow of colors, both purebreds and some fun crosses (Black Copper Marans/Splash Orpington makes CUTE babies).

Congrats!

I ended up losing all 5 of the Wyandottes chicks I hatched none of them seemed right from the start I did have another hatch from a different breeder w/o any issues its in w/ some older Orp chicks and it's doing great. So strange they all had some kind of physical issue and none would eat or drink at all I tried vitamins droppering electrolyte water boiled eggs wet feed etc etc etc. the last one died this morning it couldn't turn its little head at all. I have hatched close to 100 chicks this fall and many many more in past years and never had this occur. I'm thinking it was bad breeding I can't rule out an incubator issue but just seems bizarre that the other chick is completely normal. I have another 4 due at the end of the week from a great breeder I have hatched from before but I'm having so much anxiety.... Hoping it's not an error/oversight on my part.

I'd say either genetic or shipping disaster.

Ok where do you make the crack? Take the egg out and make sure you open up the air cell. Just take a screw and twist the tip in the shell. Once it punctures the shell you can use tweezers to open up that tiny hole and make it bigger. Big enough to see inside, like the size of a dime. Honestly I don't think the chick is alive so it really shouldn't make a big difference how big the hole is. I'm sorry. :hugs

How has everyone been? Busy here, can't wait for Christmas. How did Ravyn's paints come out? I didn't miss an update did I? Ruby, you've got more in right? How are they doing? If I have my new bator and everything goes as planned, I think I'm going to do a silkie hatch for Easter this next year.

So after the last batch all died but the one I didn't have a ton of hope for the nuggets due yesterday/today so I just added a little more water yesterday as nothing was pipped. Took my little one to a Disney (extortion) show today in a blizzard only to return home to a jumping bean CCL boy bouncing around completely dry and doing great and 2 others pipped. Tonight I go down to check and one is almost fully zipped and I left for quite a while and it still wasn't out so I opened the bator.... Poor little thing was totally stuck like shrink wrapped I had to run it under warm water it was like when I get my eyebrows waxed ouch!!!! 2 more left I opened them up to check both of them appeared really dry as well covered them w/ lube and letting them rest now. Just when I think I'm going to just leave the bator closed ughhh

The humidity was reading around 70% and was spiked to 90% when the legbar hatched (I noticed that before I saw him lol) had to quick fire up the other bator so the 1/2 shells wouldn't be assaulted while the finished absorbing everything. There is the same amount of water in there as usual it's usually only an issue when I open the lid which I didn't this time what the heck!!!!!

I fought humidity and temperature this entire hatch too. It wasn't bad the first 18 days as I like to run on the dry side but I couldn't get my levels to rise at hatch time. We heat our house with wood and it's been really cold so of course the pellet stove is roaring. I think the house was something like 8% humidity at one point.

Congrats on the new ones! Humidity can be a bear this time of year. Hope you'll give us an update and post some pics!

I really want some CL's this year.

I want to wish Rubynala97 a happy birthday today! Hope it's a great day!
